Three days. That was all Jennie gave her.
Three days had passed since Jennie had last seen Lisa, and with each tick of the clock, the silence between them grew heavier. The absence of Lisa's laughter, her teasing remarks, and the warmth of her presence felt like a gaping hole in Jennie's heart. She had hoped that Lisa would reach out, that they could talk about what had happened, but the silence was deafening. It was as if Lisa had vanished from her life entirely, leaving Jennie to grapple with the aftermath of their last moments.
Jennie's irritation simmered beneath her, fueled by the memories of their last night together. She felt abandoned, as if Lisa had given up on her after she had rejected the proposal. The thought gnawed at her, twisting her stomach into knots.
Her patience snapped. She had told herself that if Lisa didn't contact her or propose again by this day, she would forget Lisa and leave Korea for good.
With a deep breath, Jennie made her way to her laptop, her fingers flying over the keyboard as she booked a same-day flight to New York. The decision felt both liberating and terrifying. She had already informed her parents regarding this, explaining that she would be moving to New York for good, to continue her dreams, and she will be visiting them occasionally. Though her parents were reluctant to let her go, they ultimately respected her decision, wanting nothing more than for their daughter to be happy.
Her parents sat quietly in the living room when she came down with her luggage. Her mom looked up, her eyes red-rimmed from holding back tears since Jennie announced her plan earlier that morning.
"You're really doing this?" her mom asked, voice trembling as she took a step forward.
Jennie nodded softly. "I already booked the flight. I'm leaving this afternoon."
Her mom's tears finally fell, and she rushed to wrap her arms around her daughter. Jennie melted into the embrace, and the last of her strength wavered.
"Mom, you can live with me in New York," Jennie whispered, hoping her mom would come with her.
Her father sighed, "We can't just leave the company, sweetheart...And besides, your mother wants you to stay here with us in Korea."
"I understand," Jennie replied, her heart aching. "But I'll visit often, I promise."
"You can still change your mind," her dad said from the side, trying to stay calm but his voice cracked near the end.
"If it gets too lonely there..." her mom murmured, sniffling. "You come home, alright? Or we'll come to you. No matter what."
Jennie nodded. She bid her parents goodbye, insisting that she would go to the airport alone. "I might not leave if I see you both crying," she said, forcing a smile through her own tears.
As she wheeled her suitcase out the door, the wind blew softly against her cheeks - like it was asking her to stay. But Jennie kept walking.
Until something caught her eye.
A letter was sticking halfway out of the mailbox, like it had been shoved in hastily. She paused, pulled it out, and scanned the envelope. Her breath caught the moment she saw the sender. Her hands shook slightly as she tore it open, heart pounding.
Her eyes scanned the paper. And then she froze.
"This is to inform you that a meeting is scheduled today, June 17 at 12 noon to discuss the final clauses and signing of the divorce papers initiated by Ms. Lalisa Manoban..."
Jennie's world stopped. She clutched the paper to her chest, as though it might stop her heart from breaking further. "She gave up. Lisa really signed the divorce paper." Her lips trembled, but she held it in.
