The courtyard reeked of scorched stone. Your robe clung to your back, chest heaving as you stood upright, posture defiant despite the ache in your legs.

Across from you, Sukuna wiped a smear of blood off his knuckles with deliberate ease, lips curved in a slow, satisfied smirk.

"You're improving," he drawled. "Barely."

You scoffed, stretching your shoulders. "Barely is still better than you getting your ass handed to you last week."

His smile faltered for half a second. "That was a fluke," he said plainly, tilting his head. "I let you land that hit."

"Mhm," you muttered. "And I let you bruise my rib just now. Look at us—so generous."

He smirked, a half caught between annoyance and amusement. "Tch. Watch your mouth, brat. Next time, I won't stop at words."

You blinked. "What's that supposed to mean?"

His eyes gleamed. "You tell me."

You grabbed your towel from the stone bench and wiped your brow, turning before your heart betrayed the rising heat in your cheeks.

Was that... flirting? Or a threat?  You asked yourself, because with Sukuna, the line was always blurred.

Still, somehow, over the last few weeks, you'd become... familiar. More comfortable—ish. Definitely not safe because who in their right mind thinks a demon god of war is safe?

But hey, at least he didn't lie to you. No fake smiles or guilt trips about "protecting" you. He was exactly who he was: brutal, blunt, and somehow—against all odds—increasingly tolerable.

The others didn't get it. Or maybe they did, which is why they spent most training sessions watching from the edges of the courtyard like war generals silently judging a treaty.

You could feel their gazes even now.

Toji stood under the archway, arms crossed. Gojo was perched on the low wall like a bored cat, legs swinging. Nanami lingered by the pillar, eyes unreadable. Geto leaned against a post, his fingers absently twirling a ring around his thumb.

You tilted your head at them. "Enjoying the show?

Toji raised a brow. "I could train you properly, you know."

"So could I," Gojo chimed. "I'm literally the best at control."

You shrugged. "Yeah, but none of you were upfront with me, and I can hold a grudge. So." You shrugged as you nodded toward Sukuna. "He gets brownie points."

"You say that like it's a surprise," Sukuna said, voice lazy with arrogance. "I'm the best out of all these mutts. You've just finally figured it out."

You scoffed, tossing your towel at his chest with a snap. "Please. I picked you because your ego would've combusted watching me get better without you."
