The elevator doors open to reveal the lobby Chan was in earlier at the beginning of the day. He walks to the secretary and puts on a charming smile.
"Hello," He lets his Australian accent thicken just a bit more than usual. "I'm a new psychiatrist. Is there someone here I can ask questions to about my first day?"
The secretary looks up at him, and her eyes glaze over slightly from his charm. "I can see if Dr. Wilde is available."
"That would be lovely." Chan puts his right hand on the reception desk and leans against it. He smirks as he notices the blush on the poor girl's face. "What area are you assigned to?"
"The bottom floor." The moment the receptionist hears this, she straightens her posture, and her once flustered face turns into a stoic one as she begins to type furiously on the keyboard in front of her. "You must be Dr. Bang; Dr. Wilde will be here shortly."
Moments later, a woman with wavy blonde hair wearing a white coat just like his soon approaches him. She has blue eyes that are the color of the ocean in the Caribbean, but for some reason, Chan can't help but think the water must be freezing instead of warm. She holds out a hand to him to shake. "I'm Gabby Wilde."
Chan looks at her hand before taking it in his own to shake. "Christopher Bang"
"You have some questions for me?" Chan can see her fake smile, and just by her body language alone, he can tell she wants to be anywhere other than right in front of him. His patience thins, but he keeps smiling as he looks around the lobby. "May we talk somewhere more private?"
Her facade falls for a second before she quickly puts it back on and tells the Aussie to follow her. She leads him to her office. "Please, take a seat."
Chan sits down and plasters on a fake smile. "It's an honor to meet you, Dr. Wilde. Are you the head psychiatrist here?"
Gabby looks the young doctor up and down as if analyzing him. "That is correct. I oversee all of our patients' treatments and plans going forward. Our secretary, Freya, mentioned you have some questions for me?"
"Yes, ma'am. Since you oversee everything, you must know that my patients on the bottom floor have been starving for days." Chan can see her eyes darken as they turn from Caribbean blue to more of a stormy one. "I must've forgotten to assign someone to feed them while we were looking for a new psychiatrist to fill that position. I'm sorry for the inconvenience."
Chan has to hold in his scoff as he can feel his supervisor's bullshit radiating off her in waves. "Are you also unaware that previous employees have tortured them for fun?"
She folds her hands and places them on the desk directly in front of her. "May I ask who informed you about this? I assume it was one of your patients, correct?"
Chan hesitates before nodding. "Dr. Bang, you are here to treat your patients. That involves knowing that some things they say can be false or exaggerated. What probably happened was one of them got violent, which led to a previous employee shocking him for their own protection. If you do not know when to take a patient seriously or with a grain of salt, then you do not belong in my facility. Am I clear?"
Chan's jaw tenses, and his eyes harden from chocolate to obsidian. "Crystal."
His head cocks to the side for a second in irritation. "Not to be rude, but how can I take care of them when they lack the materials to meet their basic human needs?"
"I already told you I was at fault for that. Send me a list of what they need, and I will see to it myself that it'll get to you." She brings one of her hands to her head in frustration. "Please keep in mind that we were not prepared to receive your patients when we did. No one knew what to do with them since the asylums in Korea weren't strict enough to manage them. They only ended up here because, as usual, our country decided to patch the world's problems with duct tape and pretend it's magic."
So they were abandoned by their own country, exported like a problem no one wanted to fix. How nice. Chan thinks sarcastically.
She frowns before standing up and opening her office door. "Give the list of items you need to Freya, and I will get them as soon as possible. Keep in mind to look out for their tricks. They'll lure you in and then pull the rug right out from under you if you let your guard down."
Chan bows to her to show respect as he exits her office.
They always underestimate me.
