In her hand, Y/N clutched a poorly rendered painting of a flower, the brushstrokes clumsy and uneven, a pale imitation of the real thing.
It was a mockery of the true Sun Flower, a cruel reminder of the one thing that could save her and the demons from their cursed fate, but remained forever out of reach.
As Y/N stood there, lost in thought, the brush hovering over the misshapen petals, she heard a voice.
It was soft at first, a whisper carried on the breeze that seemed to seep in through the cracked and crumbling walls of the mansion, a sibilant hiss that sent a shiver down her spine.
'Master... save me...'
That voice... Was Kairi's? [If you don't remember who Kairi is, go back to Chapter "A Surprising Visitor".]
Y/N set her paintbrush down, the crude flower forgotten as she listened intently to the voice that seemed to echo through the empty halls of the Butterfly Mansion.
With a sense of trepidation, she rose from her seat, the wooden floorboards creaking beneath her feet as she made her way to the shoji door.
Sliding the door open, Y/N peered out into the darkened hallway, the once grand space now a shadowy corridor.
The mansion was eerily quiet at this late hour, the few remaining humans long since retired to their quarters, leaving Y/N alone with her thoughts and the ghostly whisper that seemed to beckon her ever onward.
'Please... it hurts so much...'
The voice came again, a little louder this time, a little more insistent.
It was a definitely Kairi's voice, soft and weak, with a hint of fear that Y/N couldn't quite place.
'How... didn't Kairi died?'
She thought and strained her ears, trying to pinpoint its exact location, before realizing with a start that it seemed to be coming from inside her own head.
Y/N's heart raced as she stepped out into the hallway, the tatami mats soft and cool beneath her bare feet.
She knew she should be scared, should be running in the opposite direction of such a strange and unexplained phenomenon.
But, she have to know what happen to Kairi. Why she had lost contact to Kairi and how she have still alive since her Demon presence was so weak to the point Y/N couldn't locate her.
With a deep breath, Y/N began to walk down the hallway, her footsteps silent and hesitant as she followed the voice.
It led her deeper into the bowels of the mansion, past the once grand reception rooms and the now crumbling bedrooms, until she found herself standing before a door that she had never seen before.
