Chapter 10

Everything that happened in the next 5 minutes was a complete blur. Emma struggled to climb to her feet as she stumbled towards the opening of the hidden trail we were all draped in.

Nick flew up from next to me in an attempt to get infront of Emma to stop her from getting back onto the main road. He grabbed her harshly and dragged her over to where I was as she kicked and flung around desperately trying to get out of his reach.

"Emma it's not safe. Buses don't just blow up." Nick whispered placing her next to me as she sobbed uncontrollably. I took her into my arms and soothed her hair down in an attempt to comfort her.

"T-T-Tomm" Emma sobbed rubbing mascara into my orange shirt.

"Shhh sweety I know, I know." I soothed rubbing her back as I looked concernly at Nick.

"What the hell just happened." Jarrod groaned rubbing his head as he sat up.

"I salam-eun sal-aissda" A voice erupted out of the sickening silence.

Everyone froze as soon as the voice entered the air and I held my breath. What kind of language even is that. I looked over at Chloe who had crawled back into a nearby bush and exchanged a glance of worry with her.

"i salam-eun kaempeu e geollil eulppunman anila ibnida" Another voice spoke reaching closer and closer to the opening of the trail.

I signalled to everyone to move back into the bushes like Chloe had. I saw out of the corner of my eye Jecinta roll into a nearby bush seconds before the man pushed the trees branch aside. I peered through the bushes leaves to see a man standing not very tall as Nick in a solider type outfit that was grey and black, he held a gun that looked unnatural and held an evil gaze as he peered into the bush. Tia had her hand over her mouth to hold back the whimpers I'm sure would have come from her mouth.

"HELP ME!" A voice which sounded a lot like Mr Henry yells hurtfully.

The soldier instantly turned around to see where the voice had come from.

"Guys lets get out of here." Jecinta whimpered running over to where Emma and I were.

"Hold on." Genna called moving to the entry.

"Gen no!" Nick hissed going to get her, but I held him back with my arm. Genna peered through the leaves just as a gunshot sounded off. Genna let out a scream unexpectedly and my eyes widen knowing full well the strangers would have heard.

"geugeos-eun yeogi eseowassda!" A soldiers voice yelled.

"Run!" Jarrod yelled grabbing Genna's hand and pulling her away from the entry.

My legs moved faster than I had ever known them to move as I knew my life depended on getting as far away from these strangers as I could. A tree branch grabbed on to my arm and scrapped some skin off as I desperately tried to get out of site from the strange me with guns. The sound of gunfire filled my ears as a scream toppled its way out of my lungs. It was nothing like in the movies at all. It was ear piercing and made tears gather in my eyes.

"What do we do." I heard Tia cry out next to me as we ran. I still don't know why she asked me. How would I know what to do. I had never experienced war before, school didn't teach you how to survive in the world when your life is in danger. Maybe they should.

"We can't out run them! Hide!" I heard Jarrod's voice boom over the still pounding gunshots that nipped at our feet. I felt someone grab my hand and pull me into the old music building that was covered in vines and was well hidden from anyone who didn't know the school. It had been blown apart by a freak tornado a few years back and had been announced unsafe and too expensive to replace. It was the perfect hide away. The person who had pulled me inside appeared to be Nick. He had a gloomy look on his face as he tugged me into a hole in the wall. He placed his fingers to his lips to tell me to be quiet as he pulled me against him in a hug.

"yeogi eseo" A soldier called to another just outside of the building.

My eyes widened in alertness as I pulled away from Nick and tightened my grip on his shoulder. Nick looked back at me with an equally concerned look. I heard some foot prints echo into the building, how on earth did they find the building. It's completely hidden. They would have to have a floor plan, blue prints at least. I felt Nick's hands rest onto the small of my back as he pulled me closer to him. I bit my bottom lip in hopes to not make a sound; whoever they were they could not know where we were. I leaned more into Nick and rested my head against his chest in hopes to try and calm him down aswell as me. I felt his lips press against my hair as he tangled his arms around me.

I didn't want to die. I couldn't die right now. Not in this moment. I wanted to know how Nick and I ended up. Do we get married? Do we have children? Am I happy?

A loud crunch of leaves under a boot startles me out of my thoughts of the impossible future for me and the man that I love. I flinch and bury my head into his chest more as if to hide forever from this constant problem. I feel a finger under my chin lifting my face to stop infront of Nick's. His features smiled and showed no concern, but his eyes gave him away. He went to whisper something, but I placed a finger over his lips and nodded. I know he wanted to tell me he loved me and how he wished we weren't hear. I'm grateful for that, but it wouldn't change anything. We would still be in this position. I lifted my lips up to his and kissed him softly and truly. He replied back then pulled away and kissed my forehead sweetly.

Suddenly a light filtered in and hit us directly. I snapped my head over to where the light came from and there was a soldier. She looked young, not much older than myself. She looked scared that she had found us. My lip quievered and I felt hot tears flood down my cheeks. This was it. I was a goner. All of a sudden she shouted out to another soldier of what I couldn't remember and moved away from the hole in the wall where she had spotted us.

Nick and I stayed in the wall for about 3 hours it seemed until we had decided the girl had saved us. We emerged from our spot and left the building behind and headed to Chloe's house through the bush tracks we knew of. Chantelle's house was the closest to the school, unless we trekked it into a random's house. As we emerged from the bush line into Chloe's paddock we ran being cautious of any other run ins with soldiers. Surprisingly the back door was open and we entered with no problems.

There was something different to Chloe's house it lacked...life. I had only ever been to her house a few times before, but her mother was always warm and constantly smiling and her father was reserved and shy, it just made the house a lively place to be. Now it was cold and dark with no sign of life anywhere.

I clung to Nick's arm with desperation. I wasn't use to this. To be honest I wanted my mother telling me that everything was alright. I wanted my dad to tell me to "toughen up princess", but I knew deep down that they wouldn't be here. I may not see them for awhile. All of a sudden Chantelle jumped out causing me to scream in shout.

"Jess thank god! It's Genna!" Chloe panicked shaking my arm fiercely. Chloe looked pale and tired, almost like she was going to pass out.

"Chlo calm down." I told her grabbing a hold of her bouncing arms.

"She got shot Jess!" Chloe yelled throwing my arms off of her.

No. Not Genny.
