Chapter 14
"Blow the candles out!" Nick hissed moving quickly over to the candle lamp that rested on the coffee table.
I ran towards the sunroom where three candles were lit. One near the doorway so you could see in, one in the centre of the room and one near the window. I quickly blew out the candle near the doorway and sprinted to the middle of the room where I blew out the second. As I blew the third out I heard Jarrod yell out.
"They are circling the house!"
"Move to different rooms! Yell out if you hear anything!" Nick's voice boomed just louder than the booming of the helicopter.
I bent down next to the couch near the window of the sunroom so that if helicopter shone its light in it wouldn't have seen me.
"It's here!" I heard Emma's voice echo through the walls.
"Right, because we know where you are Emma!" Genna yelled back clearly annoyed.
"The bloody bathroom!" screamed Emma.
"Now it's here!" I heard Tia's voice crack from the room next door to mine which was Chloe's bed room.
"Stay there!" I heard Nick yell as footsteps thumped on the floorboards towards the bedroom.
All I could hear in this moment was my heart beating rapidly as my finger nails dug deeply in my legs as I tried to stay as still as possible.
My chest became tight as I realised I was holding my breath and with urgency I let it go into the darkness of the room. Compared to being shot at by a helicopter suffocating didn't sound so bad.
All of a sudden light filtered through the window behind me and light up the room like a Christmas tree.
"NICK!" I yelled panicking.
"JESS! Stay still!" I heard Nick's voice yell from the doorway.
My leg was starting to gain pins and needles and I was growing more and more uncomfortable, but I was pretty sure the helicopter couldn't see me from behind the couch.
Suddenly the light disappeared and I relaxed moving my leg from under me so the blood would rush back to it.
"It's okay Jess, I think the chopper is gone." I heard Emma's voice flutter through the darkness.
I sighed and let my legs lift me onto my feet as I saw Genna move next to me with a lamp in her hands.
To this day I wasn't exactly sure how a lamp was going to protect her from a helicopter, but if it made her feel safe then I guess that's all that mattered.
"Thanks." I whispered to Genna squeezing her arm to reassure her, that she and the rest of us were okay.
Heavy footsteps entered my ears as Jarrod ran into the room.
"IT'S COMING BACK!" He yelled tackling me to the ground obviously not aware that Genna was also in the room.
Light burst threw the window more brightly this time catching Genna like a deer in headlights as I let out a muffled scream of surprise. Genna as impulse threw the lamp at the window causing it to shatter and the lamp fall to the ground outside.
"Genna! Get down!" I heard Nick yell still from the doorway.
The light disappeared as the helicopter moved to hover above the house.
"Bit bloody late Nick, they saw me!" Genna growled back moving to help me and Jarrod up.
"What is it doing?" Chloe wondered wide-eyed as she moved to the window.
