Luna wasn't one for Christmas.
Not that she had anything on the holiday, or enjoyed being a mini grinch about the festive time, but rather because, so far in her small existence, she didn't see much behind celebrating it.
To be honest, she'd never really celebrated before. It wasn't because she didn't want to, but because, simply speaking, she'd never gotten the opportunity. Holidays in her world weren't very significant, rather meaningless, and sometimes, if she was lucky, only offered her a very short reprieve from the upheaval that was her life in the orphanage. A night – sometimes quiet or sometimes loud – she'd spend up in her attic of a room, under lock and key to keep safe and sound from the real grinch of the holidays that took ugly pleasure in making her existence miserably.
That was, however, once upon a time, before she came to be a patient at the hospital she now called home. Or, very slowly, warming up to the idea of calling home, much to the hopes and wishes of her new caregivers, Dr. Hiddleston and Dr. Cumberbatch. This season of Christmas tidings would be different and new, the first of many for Luna to cherish and experience in a positive light that would, hopefully, leave her feeling joyful, merry, bright, but most importantly, seen.
Before anything could be done though, a very serious conversation needed to be had first. It was, a few days before the first of December, held behind closed doors in Dr. Hiddleston's office. Both he and Dr. Cumberbatch discussed how best to proceed for how Luna would, or should, experience her first Christmas with them.
"We can't overwhelm her," Dr. Hiddleston said right away.
"No," Dr. Cumberbatch agreed. "She takes the lead in this. If there's something she doesn't like, we can't push her. We can't make her feel like she's supposed to engage in a positive way, see this holiday in a new sort of light all of a sudden. We can't take away her traditions."
Dr. Hiddleston agreed wholeheartedly. This Christmas would be quite different for Luna. This would be her first time spending the holidays away from the place she'd spent it in the past. Thinking of how she'd celebrated before was unhappy to think about, but they couldn't disregard her upbringing in how she spent the holidays. With her background in mind, they realized this time could be more sad than happy. The tiniest of things could upset her, trigger her back to a past she was still struggling to comprehend happened and no longer lived. They were transitioning, and with Christmas approaching, who knew what would happen. Anything could, good or bad.
Hopefully, with fingers crossed, this holiday would be the start of something new and special. Something she'd cherish and deserved all along. This Christmas was going to be about her, and despite what they wanted, to see her happy and laugh and play, they would let her do what she wanted, what she needed. She was the one running the holiday show and they'd respect her decisions, her wants and, most importantly, her needs.
They made up a brief list of traditions and things they thought she'd like. The hospital hosted and coordinated several festive events and activities, and they hoped they could show her some of them. Participate in them, introduce some christmas magic to her. They highlighted a few, deciding to give them a try. Hopefully, again with fingers crossed, she'd take delight in them, but if not, that was okay. They wouldn't make her do anything she didn't want to.
