Chapter 5
We stood in an awkward silence for a while, not quite sure what to do. Then I remembered I had to pick up Anders.
“Oh, um I have to pick up my little brother from daycare, wanna come with?” I asked.
“Sure, I don’t see why not. How far?” Cameron asks me. I try to map out the direction in my head.
“It’s… About three blocks in the opposite direction of school, so fairly close. Oh wait here I have to change out of my pajamas, and sorry about this by the way” I say gesturing to my clothes, cheeks turning pink. He smiled that smile and said
“Nah, don’t worry about it, I would have done the same thing if I had when through what you went through today.” I nodded my head and went upstairs to quickly get dressed like a normal person. As I was getting ready I wondered to myself it’s kinda weird I never hear Cameron’s thoughts. Maybe he’s not thinking about me. I got dressed in my normal garb, hoodie, skinny jeans and my Vans and practically ran downstairs because it felt weird to leave him alone.
While walking into the living room I asked
“Alright, you ready to go?” Cameron looked up from his phone and said
“Yup, oh is it okay if I leave my stuff here?” I slightly smiled and said
“Sure.” I opened the front door and made sure he was coming along when I heard him think
‘She really is a sweet girl, not a freak.” I looked up at him and it seemed like he was blushing a little but who knows, I could have been nothing. And since I can’t control my own emotions, I blush a bit myself.
As we walk down the side walk, I can see Ander’s school come into view.
“This the place?” Cameron asked with an emotion I had not heard before, was it confused?
“Yup.” I reply a little breathlessly. I could hear a thought jump around in his head Katrina.
As we walk into the building, I see there are only a few kids left because the class ended at 1. It was now 1:20. I spot Anders’ and call out for him. He sees me and turns around smiling like the goofball he was.
“Adi!” He ran over to us but he didn’t hug me. Oh right, not that type of kid. Anders saw I was with someone new, so he just stared at Cameron the whole time.
“Oh, Cameron this is my little brother Anders, Anders this is my friend Cameron.” Cameron smiled at him with that lazy smile and Anders looked back at him with clear eyes.
“Are you Adi’s boyfriend?” He asked innocently. A look of horror must have crossed over my face because Cameron started to laugh
“No, I’m not her boyfriend; I’m her friend from school.” Anders looked like he confirmed this information in is head.
“Okay.” I realized I had to sign out Anders so I asked him to go get his stuff and wait for me with Cameron. I watched his run over to get his stuff so I went to the area where I signed him out.
Even though Anders didn’t like to hold hands, I made him anyway for the sake of safety. But just before we left the building I hear
“Big brother?” I turn around and see the most adorable little girl.
She had silky brown hair, and had blue eyes so light, they almost looked like glass. Her hair came into a neat frame around her round face and her uneven bangs covered just the slightest bit of her eyes. I noticed that they had the same mischievous twinkle that Cameron has. There was no doubt they were related.
“Oh, hey Katrina he said with a smile.” Looking at Cameron he said
“Katrina, this is Adriana. Adriana, this is my little sister Katrina.” I bent down with a smile and said
“Hi Katrina.” She looked back at me with shy eyes and said
“Hi..” I looked over at Cameron and asked,
“Are you gonna sign her out, or will your mom pick her up soon?” Cameron seemed to contemplate this
“Katrina will stay here until mother shows up” he said jokingly
“No fair! I want to go home with you big brother!” Katrina wailed with the cutest puppy dog eyes I had ever seen.
“Hey Adi, is it okay if we chill at your house for a bit? I’ll get our mom to pick us up there.”I blushed at the fact he called me Adi, only Anders called me that.
“Uh, I-I guess it should be fine.” I stammered. As Cameron went to sign her out I watched Anders chase after him. At least Anders took a liking to him. As I stood there staring at some artwork on the wall, I felt a small hand creep into mine. I looked down and saw Katrina lightly grabbing two of my fingers, and she looked back at me with a shy smile. I grin back at her; a bit surprised anyone would want to be in contact with me. I grabbed her hand and held it and I felt something strange.
It felt like genuine kindness, like she was happy to be with me. I felt her tug a little on my hand
“Adi, I think my brother likes you. He only gets that look when he’s found something he truly loves, and so far, I’ve only seen that look once. I like you too Adi, hehe” She looked up with the cutest grin ever. I swear it felt like my heart melted. It caused me to giggle a bit myself and blush. Katrina was just too cute.
“What’re we laughing about over here?” A voice asks curiously. Oh, he’s back…
“Oh, nothing!” Katrina replied before I did. I stole a glance in her direction and she winked back at me. I smile contently; this little girl would make a great friend. I look up and see Cameron cocking his head, a look of wonder in his eyes.
“Ah, well, ready to go to my house?” I ask warmly, changing the subject.
“Yea!” Anders and Katrina shout in unison. Cameron just smiles and we take our leave, walking back home.
Thinking back on it now, it seems kind of funny how we had made Katrina and Anders hold hands, but it was for safety reasons. I was holding Anders’ while he held Katrina’s while she held Cameron’s. Together with this set up, we looked like all of us had been friends for a long time. I’d like to think that, you know, to think I’ve had friends for this long, but you know… One can only wish.
