Chapter Thirty-One
Desmond
"I missed you."
I have missed her. I've missed her desperately for months. I love her and I've long given up denying it. Not that I'd ever tell her, though. I couldn't even find the courage to tell her when we were together, and I'm certainly not going to tell her now. Not when I know how this is going to end.
I tried to stop myself, but my heart wants her as much as my body does. There was no way I was walking out of this room without feeling her against me.
Her legs wrap around my waist, bringing us closer, and my head drops to the crook of her neck as I breathe in her perfume. Vanilla.
Her hands make their way to the waistband of my pants. "Are you sure, Amber?" I ask. Just because I want this, doesn't mean I'm going to let it happen if she isn't sure. I don't want her to kiss me and to touch me unless she wants to.
I also don't want to be the man she kisses because she's desperate for a distraction. Amber might appear strong and unaffected to everyone else, but I've known this girl for long enough to see the sadness pooling behind her eyes. I saw it as soon as she opened the door, and I felt it settle in the space in my heart that has long been set aside for her.
"Yes," she's already unbuckled my belt, but stops short of undoing my button, "Are you?"
The question makes me smile. Am I sure? I've never felt more sure about anything.
"Yes, Amber, I'm sure."
She smiles at me, and I'm embarrassed to say my cheeks flush. She has the most gorgeous smile, and it looks even brighter with her tousled golden hair framing her face. I tuck one strand behind her ear and bring my mouth back down to hers. Slowly this time.
Our mouths move together, and I commit her taste, smell, and feel to memory. I meant it when I said I missed her. I've thought about her like this every night for a long time. Even for the year I didn't see her. I never stopped remembering.
Our movements go from slow and patient to desperate and wanting in a matter of seconds. My pants are long forgotten on the floor next to her dress. I'm still in my underwear, and she's still wearing her underdress, which leaves little to the imagination.
"Desmond," Amber says, scooting to the edge of the desk so we are flush against one another.
Her breathy voice has me pulling at the thin straps of her gown until that too joins the pile of discarded clothes. My boxers quickly follow, and we both sigh in relief when there is finally nothing between us.
My hands make their way up the smooth skin of her thighs until I'm there. She gasps, and I have to hide my smile in her shoulder as I hear her continue to make breathy noises. When her nails make scratches along my back, I know I can't wait much longer. I move my hands to her waist and then her hair as I position myself.
Amber cries out when we finally satisfy the desire that has been building between us for longer than we'd both care to admit. I kiss my way across her face from her nose to her cheeks until I meet her mouth. The kisses are sloppy as we both whisper pleading words.
"Amber, I should probably -"
I'm cut off by an abrupt knocking on the large office door. I rest my forehead against Amber's and sigh before reluctantly stepping away. She looks so perfect sitting on the desk with her hair fanning over her shoulders and her lips pink and swollen from mine.
"You're majesty, the guests have arrived and are waiting in the strategy hall," a guard says through the door. His voice sounds unsure as if he's worried Amber, the queen, will punish him for interrupting with such trivial news.
