"I freakin' knew it! I knew that freakin' son of a gun was a jerk!" Krissy whisper shouts. We walk towards the woods. We're in Song's Melody, and again, the place gives me the chills.
I almost cry again, but I don't. I need to be strong. Even though my heart is broken, I know we can't let another second go by without Alicia. It just doesn't feel right.
Krissy loops her arm around mine, making me feel safe.
"When we get back," Alyssa says, "We'll end him." I nod, feeling anesthetic. We walk through the trees, weaving around broken twigs, and dead leaves.
The bow and arrows on my back make me want to just stop and fall to the ground, but Krissy keeps me from doing that.
We fall behind a little, Krissy and I, but the rest don't make a move to slow down. They know we want to talk alone.
"Are you okay?" She asks me. I nod, but then I shake my head no. She stops and gives me a hug, but I just stand there, stiff. I honestly don't want a hug from Krissy right now. I want one from Gavin.
I know it's stupid, Krissy's my best friend, and Gavin betrayed me, but I fell in love with Gavin. And now I'm lost. Broken.
Why is love so complicated?
She lets go of me, so I tell Krissy what I just thought, and like I expected, Krissy understands.
"I know I've never been in love before, but I just have a feeling, I mean, it's a tiny feeling, but, I feel like Gavin's going to come back for you."
And it's like Krissy jinxed it because Gavin bursts through the trees, looking tired and about to pass out. His eyes are unfocused, like he's been running around all day.
"Gavin?" I ask. He looks at me, and gives me a slight smile, and then he falls to the ground, unconscious.
"Gavin!" I rush over to his side, and put me hand under his nose, to see if he's still breathing. I can feel little puffs of air on my palm, so I know he's still alive. I try to wake him up, but he won't budge.
I look over at Krissy.
"I'm gonna try to wake him up." I say.
"Wait, you're not gonna electro--." Then she stops, "You are gonna electrocute him! Great! I wanna see this!" I give her a look, and she stops her excitement. I guess she's still mad at him.
I put my hands on his chest, and I can immediately feel the sparks of energy that flow to my hands, like the time in my room.
Then they leave, and a slight tremor goes through him. But he doesn't wake up yet.
This time, I put in a little more electricity, enough to make him feel a little pain. He jerks awake, gasping.
I put my arms around him, glad that he's woken up. I feel tears start to trail their way down my face. He wipes them away with his fingers, and puts his arms around me.
"I was working with her from the start, but then you changed me," He blurts out, fast, and continues, squeezing my middle tightly, "We were pretending to be your parents, that night we were sitting at dinner, and then we planned to make you fall in love with me, and then I would betray you." He laughs dryly, "But she didn't know I would fall in love with you first." I smile widely, expecting that to be it, but he says more.
"Song's Melody was actually full of violent people and criminals and we actually didn't care how you died, but after that, Liliana started to plan your death, from beginning to end. And at Krissy's house, you asked me what my power was, it's this." I glance at him uncertainly, but his eyes are so soft, so loving, and I begin to trust him again. His face starts to morph, turning into the facial features of Krissy. I hear a gasp behind me, but it's sounds quiet in my ears. His voice also sounds quiet to me too, as he speaks again.
"I turned into the secretary and kidnapped Alicia. I may have, against the better judgement of my current self, hurt her a little." Now all the sound returns, and I gasp. Loudly, but he quickly talks again, stopping what I was about to say, "but I regret it! I regret everything. She made me think that what we had was love, and I believed her. Like a fool." I make a face and his own face turns questioning.
"You know she's like a hundred years old, right?" Now he makes a face and laughs softly. I hug him again and then he starts to mumble incoherent words, and I start, putting my arms back at my sides and looking at him. Has he gone crazy?
But then I start to understand what he's saying.
"I love you, I love you, I'm sorry. God, I love you." He repeats. I hug him again, tighter this time, but he's rigid in my arms.
"I love you too." I answer. His body finally relaxes at my words, like he needed to ask for forgiveness in order to hug or love me back. I move in to kiss him when Krissy clears her throat.
I let go of Gavin and look at her. She's standing a few feet away from our lovefest, looking very uncomfortable.
"As much as I hate to break this up, we kind of have to go." Krissy says, looking towards where our friends went, and looking back at us, "And Gavin?"
We both look up at Krissy.
"Be good to her." Gavin nods, and Krissy, satisfied with that answer, walks away towards the prison, her arms crossed in front of her chest.
I glance at Gavin and give him a quick kiss, and then we both get up and start to walk.
It was time to save Alicia.
-----
I see my friends in deep conversation, a little far off. When Gavin and I get to where my friends are standing, they turn to look at us and they gasp.
But they don't say anything. I guess Krissy told them. Or at least, told them something that would make them hate Gavin a little less.
"Well, don't just stand there," Kellie says, "Are you gonna help or not?"
