I start to get nervous, without knowing why. My hands get all clammy, and my breathing sounds labored to my own ears.
But then I do realize why. Gavin is starting to drive into what looks like an abandoned town. I sneak a peak at Gavin, who is driving calmly, without a care in the world. But I have a care.
The buildings look old, and the walls look kind of dark and dead, compared to where I live. The streets are empty and the sky is gray, as if it wants to start raining and pouring but it forgot how, so it just stopped.
My phone vibrates in my bag, again. But again, I ignore it.
"Gavin?" I ask, uncertainly. He looks at me and just smiles, as if acting calm will make me calm.
"Where are we going? And don't say it's a secret. I want to know." I tell him, getting a bit frightened. As we keep driving, Gavin turns into an alleyway, and I think, This is it. I'm going to be murdered in an alleyway.
He parks the car and I close my eyes, my heart pounding wildly in my chest, preparing myself for what is about to come, but when Gavin doesn't start savagely hacking me with an axe, I open my eyes, calming down.
Gavin looks at me strangely, as if he can't comprehend what he is doing, but he shakes it off. He replaces that look with one that promises pure excitement. My heart starts to beat loudly again, but not because I'm scared.
"Well, are you coming?" He asks me.
"Huh?" I say, sounding like an idiot. He points towards a building at the end of the alley. The sign says PETE'S DINER.
"Oh, sorry." I tell him, getting a tad flustered, but embarrassed to the max, and get out of the car after Gavin holds the door. When I look at him, he smiles and offers me his arm, which I take. He smells like some kind of spicy aftershave, and not like the cologne I smelt on him this morning.
He closes the car door, and locks it, walking us both to the restaurant. As we step inside, a little bell jingles, signaling our arrival. I close my eyes, smelling the sweetness of the syrup, and the fat off the bacon. As I open my eyes, I notice that most of the customers here are elderly, and looking at us with a curious expression, might I add, except for one.
The girl looks up from her stack of pancakes, and I can finally see her better.
She looks about our age, 17, and has hair I've always been jealous of, jet black, silky waves. Her face looks perfect, and it looks like she's not wearing any makeup. She's wearing bright red lipstick, and looks like the girl version of Sherlock Holmes. But she just oozes out mean.
When she sees me looking at her, she gives me an unnerving smirk, and I look down at my feet, just to avoid her seemingly penetrating gaze.
Gavin tugs me towards a booth close to a wall, and he slides in front of me, while I go in the other. We take a look at the menus, and when a server comes up to take our order, Gavin is very polite, making me jealous.
Wow, he really is doing something to me.
"And you?" The server asks. I look down at my menu.
"Um, I'll try a strawberry pancake with some coffee, please." I tell her, giving her a grateful smile, even though all I want to do is choke her so she won't look at Gavin again.
While we wait, Gavin and I exchange questions and answers, but he seems cut off from me, like he doesn't want to tell me anything, if he can. He's not getting off that easy.
"So who are you living with, while you're in school?" I ask him. He drums his fingers on the table.
"Well, I'm actually living with my aunt, and I haven't had a dad in years. Bailed out on me." I just nod, not wanting to break this moment, but then our order comes, and our moment is broken anyway.
