Cut to the cliché scene in that old timey coming of age film where the high school student is laying on their bed, staring at nothing while listening to that one band their mother disapproves of. This was the exact same state Calum is in. As the song plays he resonates with every lyric. Almost as if they are speaking directly to him.

Miscellaneous thoughts of nothing and everything run through his head at the same time. Back to school. Back to hell. Back to the collection of people who just didn't get it. Now try to understand that Calum isn't completely alone. He has friends who he takes with him to the depths of his cesspool. However, they would come out eventually. He is just trapped in his thought. He's stifled by the most dangerous being: his brain. The low self esteem, constant belittling, self loathing, and lack of understanding was continuous. His only safety blanket being the lyrics that implant themselves in his brain.

Calum thinks that school is a waste of time. Teachers just shove useless information in the brains of impressionable student to get some money. He's pretty sure that their lives are just as miserable as the students.

After half ass-ly getting dressed, he saunters to the kitchen and makes a bowl of cereal. His headphones never leave his ears. Hole is currently playing but is cut off by an incoming call. He rolls his eyes at the interruption of his peace and sees that it's Michael one of his best friends.

"Yeah?" Calum speaks into the phone.
"Well good morning to you too sunshine. I'm on my way."
Another eye roll.
"Okay I'll be waiting outside." He responds to keep the conversation light and sweet.

This was a daily thing. Michael was the only friend Calum had with a car so they drove to school together. They had known each other for forever. And although teenage life comes with the constant repetition of a daily schedule that makes you want to blow your brains out, Calum never got tired of Michael. With him there was always something new. Just like his hair color.

Coincidentally as Calum makes his way out to Michael's car, he notices that his hair is now a vibrant purple.

"You're going to go bald." He comments stepping into the van.

Michael's laugh is loud and genuine. "Would it kill you to be nice for once?" He questions.

"Yes. Yes it would." He deadpans as he begins to fiddle with Michael's radio system.

Now it's Michael's turn to roll his eyes.

They park in the front of the school and lean up against the outside of car waiting. Calum however is mostly watching. He does that. He watches the interactions between people and questions how some could be so open and confident and happy. Especially since it's the first day of school.
How can anyone be happy to come here?

He's suddenly pulled out of his thoughts when he realizes that the rest of their friends, Ashton and Luke, have arrived. Even though all of them hung out throughout summer break it was refreshing to be in school with them to use each other as forms of moral support. After joking around a little bit and talking about how much they wanted to ditch, they ended up entering the school building thanks to parental entity Ashton.

Orientation went by quite smoothly. The boys got their schedules and got their lockers and electives sorted out before leaving for the day.

As they all piled into Michael's car, Calum couldn't help but notice the c behind them. More specifically the girl getting into the car.

From what he could tell she was beautiful.
