"Dear Diary,
I fear this sign of his will be the last.
It is a bird, at least a carving of one, carved in the most beautiful blue crystal, sparkling magically in the sunlight with a blue just like his eyes. The beautifully crafted little songbird is no bigger than the top of my finger and hangs from a thin, almost invisible thread with its wings lifted in flight, light dancing on its smooth glassy body as it dangles from my neck. In its tiny beak, however, was another note and the note reads this:
JAY,
THIS REMINDED ME OF YOU EVERYDAY. I WISH I HAD NEVER HAD TO LEAVE YOU. I HAD NO CHOICE.
BUT I SEE YOU HAVE MANAGED SO WELL ON YOUR OWN, AND IT COMFORTS ME NOW THAT YOU DO NOT NEED ME TO SURVIVE, NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK.
I MISSED YOU EVERY DAY. EVEN WHEN I WAS FOLLOWING YOU, FOR I KNEW I COULD NEVER TRULY COME BACK, NEVER TALK TO YOU FACE TO FACE.
THE WAR IS OVER BUT THE ENEMY STILL HUNTS ME. BRING US TOGETHER AND THEY WOULD ONLY KILL US BOTH. IT PAINS ME TO SAY THAT YOU ARE SAFER ALONE.
AND NOW I MUST FLEE THIS COUNTRY ALTOGETHER; IT SEEMS UNLIKELY I WILL RETURN.
I'M SORRY, JAY. YOU ARE WHAT KEEPS ME FROM GIVING UP.
I CANNOT EVER FORGET YOU.
I PRAY YOU WILL NOT FORGET ME.
And all I can do now is know in my heart that it was Jake all along, that deep down I knew he was still out there, and I will continue to know that, no matter where he is, or what trouble he's gotten himself into, he'll always survive.
I have to believe it. That, and promise I will never forget him.
How could I?
But I fear there is too much of my brother in this diary and though I love him in my heart I do not want to be reminded of him leaving me whenever I write here. So here forth, I bring this diary to a close.
And the last thing I shall say is that why ever he's being hunted, still, I know he is doing it for good. That unlike some things in this long, Proud war, so many died or sacrificed themselves for good.
And that, I believe above all, should never be forgotten.
Jay (Jayden) Darcy
