"Dear Diary,
What with all I had to tell you last night, I forgot to tell you about the present.
I'm living in a hole in the ground far east of where - it happened, and don't laugh, for it's a large hole, like a little cave, really, but in the middle of a huge plain of grass, concealed by the long grass and only tree. I've spent the morning setting up camp before settling down to right this, laying out the blankets and sleeping bag, my few clothes, writing things and Bird Book, and I even managed to push one of the Proud War posters into the sloping wall of the cave-hole, the one that says:
BE PROUD - BE LOUD
Make a Noise...
Don't Let the Enemy Catch YOU in the Dark
It has a picture of a woman in a spotlight with Enemies in long trench coats surrounding her in the shadows, her with her mouth open wide, screaming,so that our own nearby soldiers can hear and rescue her. I don't know how that theory would work in the empty plains of England where I am now, but anyway.
With tins running out, I think I'd better go look for food of some kind.
I'll be back."
