Loud vibrations kill the blue jay's spell like a dagger.
It's my phone.
"Hello?"
"Callie? Where are you?" My mother's voice, a mix of anger and worry, fills my left ear.
"Um... On my way home, Mum. I was about to tell you."
"Home from where? It's almost nine o'clock!"
"Sorry. I was -" panicking, I know I'll never be able to come up with a believable excuse quick enough. "- look Mum, I'll tell you when I get home."
"Where are you?"
"In the village." Which is true. "I'll be home in ten minutes. Bye."
"Ca-" I quickly hang up, before she can say any more.
Instead, I focus on an excuse. It'll take me the whole walk home.
It doesn't matter that I forgot my house key when I left home almost three hours earlier. Both my parents are standing in the doorway of the front door, waiting.
Oh God. I'm going to have to lie like I've never lied before.
"Callie." My dad speaks first. "Where on earth have you been? We were very worried about you." But I'm looking at my father in a whole new light now. I don't believe he was worried at all. I know now how many times he's lied before, and I have no reason to believe otherwise today.
I don't see why they're making such a big deal out of it, anyway.
"I was at the library." I tell them, poker faced. It may sound kinda nerdy, but I spend a lot of time there. Their computers are better than mine, and I read a lot as well. It's a cool place. "aI was reading a book I'd been looking at and I didn't realise how late it had gotten. Sorry."
Mum swallows, and I brace myself for what happens next.
Nothing does.
We go inside, and we eat supper.
And that's the end of that.
I thought.
AN: hi yeah I know I've written loads today but I have an idea for another story, and I really want to finish this one first... So yeah ;)
