SOMETHING WAS OFF.
She didn't quite know what it could be, at least not yet. She just had a gut feeling that something had gone wrong while she was sleeping.
Vienna walked to the bathroom as normal. Lia was already awake and had vacated their shared room.
She brushed her teeth, rinsing the minty paste down the sink with haste. She finished the rest of her bathroom tasks, which included brushing her hair, which was still slightly curly from when she had curled it the previous day.
She put on her favorite pair of jeans, pulling on her favorite hoodie and cozy socks. She wanted anything to take her mind off the strangely tight feeling in her chest that she had been harboring since the previous night.
Vienna has had panic attacks before, but this felt different. Like a twinge in her stomach that she could not quite place. She decided she would talk to Cassie, because the girl was very understanding and would be able to tell her that nothing was wrong at all.
The short stretch of hallway was dark, and it felt very vacant. Everyone was likely awake due to Vienna's sleeping in, but that fact did not calm her nerves even a little.
Cassie's room was empty, and Vienna swore her heart rate picked up at the sight of her bed. It looked neat, like it hadn't been slept in the previous night. Though Cassie was tidy, beds had a certain look about them right after being slept in. The slightly ruffled blanket, the crooked pillows.
This bed had none of that.
Cassie hadn't slept there last night.
Vienna hurried down the hall, down the stairs. Agent Sterling had been staying at the house recently to make sure that nothing went wrong, and Vienna knew to turn to Sterling. She would know what to do, right?
The door was already cracked when Vienna reached it.
She stood outside, listening for motion in the room. A clue that she was there. A rustle of her favorite blazer, her hairbrush hitting the counter. Something, anything.
She pushed the door open gently, as if not to startle the woman, though Vienna already had a hunch that she was not in the room.
"Agent Sterling?" Her voice was hardly above a whisper, as if Agent Sterling would be in the room only if she was almost completely silent.
