Chapter 15 Arix Returns

13 June 2015

Vergil

It had been a week since the city fell under attack. Demons had begun appearing at all hours. Sage and Nero had been called back to the city for assistance. Trish and Lady were exhausted. Dante and Noelle were running of adrenaline, sex, and fumes. I was surprised Nero could even stand some days. And then there was Sage. The reaper was doing all she could to hold it together. But human casualties were unavoidable.

Alexis had been my God given solace (pun intended). She healed the wounds, fed us, made sure we were rested. I couldn't help but look at her and think about all she had done to keep the team and her sisters from crashing out. Even now, as my Yamato cleaved a demon in two, her blonde hair echoed in my minds eye. She was beauty and grace and everything we needed. Nero landed beside me, devil trigger releasing as he frowned.

"Dad... These ones look different." My son said.

I looked closer at the being he had just slain. He was speaking truth. They looked humanoid, wearing leather armor on their human shaped bodies. But they had plain features, no eyes or hair. Their ashen skin was covered in sharp feathers around their wrists and necks, with batlike wings on their backs. These weren't typical demons. I had spent years in hell and months pouring over my father's codices and journals.

"This is not good." I said, pulling out my phone to snap images of the creatures before they turned to dust. The dust was black, fine like the girl's golden angel dust. "These aren't normal demons. I've never seen them before."

"Shit. What do we do?" Nero asked.

"We call the angels. They would be the only ones with knowledge of this. At least that I know of." I sighed, watching the last one fade to ash and disperse on the wind.

The city's alarms sounded in another sector, and I sighed. "Come on, Nero."

My son huffed and we headed off in the direction of the sounds. This never seemed to end.

Alexis

I sighed as the sirens silenced for more than five minutes. The constant attacks had been draining. Nero had just stumbled in and headed upstairs to shower. Sage came down moments later to grab a couple of the sandwiches I had begun to keep stocked. I nodded and loaded her up with the sandwiches, Nero's favorite chips, and some protein drinks. The half demons needed all the calories they could get. Vergil leaned on the doorframe, his weary eyes showing his age. I moved to hold him, my arms around his leaner body as he engulfed me in a tired hug. He had never shown such vulnerability outward on such a scale. But lately he was too exhausted to hide it.

"You are our saving grace." He murmured, kissing my golden hair.

"You need a meal and sleep." I said softly. "Come on. I have a plate heated up for you."

I nudged him to sit, and he let go of me. The warm plate settled in front of him, and he sighed before tucking into the meal. A tingle went down my spine before I felt the arrival of Gabriel. He walked in the back door, and I nodded in greeting. Gabe looked like he had been running hard. His hair was disheveled, and he wasn't as pristinely glamoured as usual.

"You look like shit." Gabe greeted.

Vergil scoffed. "Likewise."

"Easy. Everyone has been running ragged. What brings you down here, Gabe?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.
