Chapter 14 Quiet, Too Quiet
6 June 2015
Noelle
Stir crazy. Cabin fever. Anxiety. Call it whatever they wanted, I had it. I was nervous and spastic on a good day. Dante had used that energy to his own advantage. If we weren't eating or sleeping we were training or fucking. It was amazing to have him back in my life again and I wanted nothing more than to keep it that way. But the waiting was killing me.
Jobs were steady and good. Alexis and Vergil were better than ever. Sage and Nero were traveling the world with Nico, reaping and fighting demons. Life was calm and quiet. We spent days at the shop but nights in the townhouse. It was picturesque. The only problem was my instinct. Nothing was ever easy or quiet with us. Not for this long.
Dante smirked as I paced the floor in the shop yet again. He was always keenly aware of my movements these days. We were so in tune with each other, it was unreal. As I walked back past his desk, he moved to sit on the edge of it and grabbed my waist. Our lips met in a harsh kiss and his hands gripped my ass to keep me pressed tightly to his body. I frowned when he finally pulled away.
"Not cool." I sighed.
"C'mon babe. You need to loosen up. It's okay." He smirked.
"No, it's not okay, nothing is ever this quiet for this long. Something is going on and it's driving me nuts." I pouted.
"Baby. Breathe. You are safe no matter what they have planned." He said. "I promise you. They won't hurt you again. Over my dead body."
I sighed heavily and leaned into his body. "That's what I'm afraid of."
Dante frowned. "Babe, nothings killed me yet. Not even my own brother."
"I know. I know." I huffed. "But I can't lose you. Or my sisters. And I can't help but feel like everything is going to come crashing down and I will lose someone I care about."
His strong arm tightened around my waist as he tipped my chin up and stroked his thumb over my cheek. "We will be okay. We face it together. As a team. As a family." He assured.
Doubt raged in my heart, but I nodded. We had made that same promise, me and the girls. Together, as a family. That was how we faced things. And we had always come out on the other side. This would be no different. We would make it through this. Gabriels favorite quote came into my mind, and I sighed, relaxing a bit.
"Evil always contains the seeds of its own destruction. It is ultimately negative, and therefore encompasses its downfall, even at its moments of apparent triumph." I murmured.
"Neil Gaiman?" Dante asked.
I raised a brow. "Yes... It's Gabriels favorite quote."
"One of Nero's too. Kid is a closet bookworm." He chuckled.
I shook my head. I wanted to believe him. I wanted nothing more than to trust him and believe what he was telling me. But I had learned from my past and, as a warrior, I knew better than to let my guard down. I had research to do and training. And I would be damned if old, sexy, and scruffy distracted me from that entirely.
If there was one thing the Sparda men were, it was persistent. But Dante seemed to catch on this time and stepped away to the bookshelf for a moment. He returned with a dusty leatherbound tome that was no bigger than a diary. I frowned at it as he handed it to me.
"My old man wasn't the best. But he took notes. This was his diary during the war. Vergil found it. Maybe it will help you. There's some passages inside that are written in angelic and we can't translate them." My lover said softly.
I took the book gingerly and flipped it open. The spine creaked from lack of use, but I was gentle as I paged through it. The book seemed to recognize angel blood as it drew me to the first passage. This information was of use. It held a name. A name no one had spoken in millennia.
"Holy shit." I breathed.
"That was fast." Dante said, peering over my shoulder. "What is it."
"A name. I need to contact Gabriel. Or one of the brethren." My wings formed and I headed out back.
Dante followed. His effort to scale the building was slower than mine as I pushed off and rose up to the roof on heavy wingbeats. It was still hard to take off like that, but I managed. I landed on the roof, striding over the small, covered chalice if angel dust we kept up here. Dante walked over, keeping a safe distance as I grabbed a bit and splashed it from my fingertips onto the rooftop. The dust glowed in a circle as a beam on light shot down. Azrael stood before us with a loud crack.
"Noelle." He sighed. "We were in a meeting—"
"This is important." I said, cutting him off. I was breaking a lot of rules today.
Azrael's face was obscured by his cloak, but I could sense the raised brow he gave me.
I huffed and he beckoned me forward, pleased I at least respected that rule. I stepped forward, brandishing the journal and showing him the passage. He was silent, then waved a hand over the book. The name glowed, then the pages stilled.
"Michael is pleased, little bird. Await orders." Azrael said calmly. A boney hand settled on my shoulder. "You did good, little one. But this is beyond us all now."
I stilled. That wasn't good. He was gone with another sickening crack. Dante approached me.
"Nice guy. Great conversational skills. But damn is he quick to leave." He chuckled.
"I'm not sure I want to know what he meant." I said softly.
Dante nodded. The wind brushed through the city and we both bristled. A sinister laugh carried on the breeze.
"Well... You were right... It was too fuckin quiet." Dante sighed as the city's demon alert sounded in the distance.
