"They're here," breathed Jake as he walked past us towards the front door. As soon as he said that, I heard their footsteps. I was in the kitchen playing cards with Billy.
I heard the door open and Jacob said "Hey, Bells!"
"Hey Jake."
Next I heard my dad's voice. "Hello, Jacob." I could picture them shaking hands.
Then my mom asked, "Where's Renesmee?"
I laughed. "In here, mom."
They rounded the corner and I bounded up and hugged both of them at the same time.
Then my dad got this weird look on his face. I touched his cheek questioningly. He smiled and explained, "It's just that usually when we're away, you change so much. It's like meeting a whole new Nessie. So it's strange that you haven't grown half a foot in these past two months."
I replied, "I know what you mean, dad. It's strange to think that I'll always be the same."
Then Jacob put his arm around me and said, "And you'll always be beautiful."
I slid out from under his arm and quickly touched his cheek, thinking "Not now, Jake." My parents were already uncomfortable with Jacob's feelings towards me. No need to make it worse.
It was currently the end of June. My parents had come to visit for Jake's graduation in April, and then they had left for a two-month second honeymoon to someplace they called Esme's Island.
A few days after they returned, we were all sitting around the table while Jacob, Billy, and I ate. Usually Jake took me hunting because the only human food I could stand to eat was apples, but for some reason they had insisted I eat human food tonight.
When my dad sat down, he said to me, "So Nessie, I have some exciting news for you."
I was confused. What could be more exciting than my parents finally coming home? I noticed that my mom was smiling and Jake looked disappointed.
Dad continued, "I was just on the phone with Carlisle, and he agrees with Bella and me that you should go to high school."
All I felt was shock. He must have read my thoughts, which went something like this: "What?! Why?! How?! I already know more than they could possibly teach me in high school! I can't be around humans! Why can't I just stay here with Jake?"
Dad chuckled and said, "I know, I know. But listen, Nessie. We think it's important that you learn to be around humans. It's not so bad, once you get used to it."
And then Mom added, "And we want you to have every human experience possible. Oh man, now I sound like you, Edward." They smiled at some inside joke. I still couldn't speak.
"Of coarse, Bella and I will go with you. We wouldn't make you go alone."
"But the humans..." I finally managed to say out loud.
Mom replied, "That will take some getting used to, but we have two months before school starts to prepare you."
"Where would we go?" I demanded.
"You are already enrolled to a high school in Vancouver."
"Why can't Jacob come with me?" Suddenly they all looked uncomfortable.
Finally Jake said, "I have... something to take care of here. But don't worry Ness, if I can get through school, then surely you can." Then he got up and ran outside towards the woods.
