I walked into my room and looked around. My walls were light purple with dark purple polka dots. I had a huge, fluffy white bed. It was the only one in Grandpa's house that was ever used. My favorite green rug was at the foot of the bed.
I looked at my bookshelf. I had 7 stuffed animals sitting in a row, each with a picture of me from every year of my life. Aunt Rosalie had made sure my rapid growth was well documented. And it was Aunt Alice's idea to give me a special stuffed animal every year on my birthday.
Thinking of Alice brought tears to my eyes. Why did this have to happen? Jacob said everything would be perfect now. He was wrong.
I turned around and saw mom walk in and sit on my carpet. A year ago, I would have folded myself on her lap, but I was taller than her now. So I just sat beside her with my head on her shoulder.
She grabbed my hand. "Jacob's on his way to Vancouver. He's too nervous about Aro being here to stay away." She looked at my expression. I'm not sure what she saw, most likely anxiousness.
I "spoke" to her using my free hand. I was thinking about the fact that now I had one more life to worry about. If I wasn't so special, then Aro wouldn't be here.
Suddenly mom was very stern. "Don't you dare blame yourself for this, Renesmee. You didn't choose to be a hybrid, and you didn't invite Aro to come spy on us. And as for Alice, none of us saw this coming." She sighed. "I think you inherited just a little bit of your father's pessimism. Oh, and by the way, Eleazar is coming along with Jake. They should both be here tomorrow."
This made me slightly happier. At least it felt like we were getting closer to uncovering the truth about what had happened to Alice.
I looked at the clock, and it was 11:30. I couldn't keep myself from yawning. Mom smiled. "It's so easy to forget that you have half of the old me in you." She stood up. "Come on Nessie, try to get some sleep. Hopefully we will learn a lot tomorrow."
She tucked me in bed, which probably looked odd if you didn't know that I was technically only seven. When she was almost to the door, I spoke aloud for the first time.
"Mom, do you think the story that I told Shelley was ok?"
She chuckled. "I'm sure it will work out fine, honey. Just don't walk up to her and tell her that we're vampires."
"I would never do that!"
She turned out the lights. "I know you wouldn't, which is why I'm not worried. Goodnight."
I sighed. Looking back, my cover probably could have been ten times better. When we got to dance, I had told Shelley that we all went to the parking lot to get something out of dad's (I actually said Edward's) car when we heard a loud noise in the woods. When we went to see what it was, we found a fallen tree.
It was the most stupid story ever. I had expected her to ask the obvious questions, like "Why did you all have to go to his car?" or "What were you getting from the car?" or "Why didn't anyone else hear the loud noise?" But instead, she just said "Oh." And that was the worst response she could have possibly given.
I rolled over and closed my eyes, trying to push all thoughts of Shelley out of my mind. Mackenzie had invited me to go get frozen yogurt with her, Shelley, Sutton, and Beth after school tomorrow. It would be nice to completely lose myself in the human world.
With that thought, my mind drifted into dreams of running through the Alaskan forest with Jacob, and my worries would have to wait until tomorrow.
