The next morning, Taehyung woke up to the faint sound of gloves hitting leather.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Blinking, he realized the sound wasn’t part of a dream — it was coming from the room next door. Curious, he rose and followed the noise.
Jungkook stood in the middle of his makeshift training space, shirt clinging to his body with sweat, fists wrapped tight as he pounded into the heavy bag. His movements were sharp, controlled, yet there was something desperate in the way he hit — as if every punch was a war against an invisible enemy.
Taehyung lingered at the doorway, watching. He had never seen this side of Jungkook before — raw, unguarded, almost violent, yet strangely vulnerable.
After a few minutes, Jungkook noticed him. He stopped, pulling off his gloves, his chest heaving. “You’re awake,” he said casually, as if it was nothing.
Taehyung hesitated before asking softly, “Why do you… do this?”
Jungkook wiped his face with a towel, his eyes dark but honest. “Because pain here—” he tapped his bruised knuckles “—makes it easier to forget the pain here.” He tapped his chest.
Taehyung’s breath got caught. He didn’t know why, but those words felt like an echo of something deep inside him too.
Taehyung’s throat tightened. He stepped closer, but before he could say more, Jungkook’s hand slipped. The heavy bag swung back with force, slamming into his shoulder. Jungkook winced, clutching it.
“Kook!” Tae rushed forward, grabbing his arm. His fingers lingered longer than they should, worry painted across his face.
Jungkook gave a half-smile, half-grimace. “Don’t look at me like that. It’s nothing. I’ve taken worse.”
But Taehyung didn't let go. His eyes softened. “Pain is a pain. It still hurts.”
The moment hung fragile between them — until a voice cut through.
“Taehyung!”
They froze. Taehyung’s father stood at the doorway, fury simmering in his eyes. He had come with a softened heart, almost ready to take his son back. But the sight before him — his son, holding onto a boy with bruised knuckles, tattoos, and danger written all over him — shattered whatever softness had been left.
Mr. Kim’s words struck like a blade. “So this is where you’ve been hiding?” “This is what you’ve become? Keeping company with someone who throws his life away in filth and violence?”
“Enough!” His father’s voice cracked like thunder. “I was blind to even think of forgiving you. As long as you stand beside him, you are no son of mine.”
Taehyung froze, panic rising in his chest. “Appa… it’s not what you think—”
But his father’s gaze had already settled on Jungkook with disdain. “I should have known. You’ve fallen into bad company. No wonder that family rejected you. Look at yourself — wandering around with a boxer from the streets, a boy who paints skin for a living. You’ve disgraced me even more.”
Jungkook’s fists tightened, but he said nothing. He had been called worse, and he knew stepping forward would only make it worse for Taehyung.
Taehyung’s lips trembled. He wanted to shout, to defend Jungkook, to scream that it wasn’t like that. But his father’s words clamped down on his throat, leaving him speechless.
Jungkook, silent until now, finally stepped forward. His voice was steady but cold. “Don’t blame him for being here. He didn’t do anything wrong.”
The father glared at him. “Stay away from my son. You’ll ruin him too.”
He left, dragging the weight of his disapproval like a storm cloud behind him. Taehyung stood frozen, shame and fear crushing him.
And as if that wasn’t enough—
A soft, mocking laugh came from the corner. Jungkook’s girlfriend, Yuna, had been waiting nearby. She had seen everything.
“So this is why you’ve been ignoring me?” she smirked, though her eyes glinted with jealousy. “You’re living with him now? Cute. I should’ve known you’d get bored of me quickly.”
Jungkook’s brows furrowed. “Yuna, it’s not like that.”
But she didn’t believe him. She glanced at Taehyung with venom in her eyes. “I hope you’re proud of yourself. You’ve managed to steal my boyfriend.”
Taehyung’s breath hitched. The insult wasn’t loud, but it pierced deep.
Jungkook turned sharply, his jaw tightening. “That’s enough,” he snapped, voice cold. “Don’t talk about him like that.”
She blinked, taken aback by his sudden defense. She had expected Jungkook to deny, to brush it off — not to shield Taehyung.
Taehyung’s face flushed crimson. His heart pounded with confusion, shame, and something else he couldn’t name. Before he could say anything, Yuna stormed off, heels clicking sharply against the pavement though not without one last scornful look at Taehyung.
The gym fell silent again. Taehyung stood frozen, his chest heavy with shame, hurt, and confusion.
“I didn’t mean to cause all this…”
Jungkook, still clutching his shoulder, looked at him with something softer. Not pity, not guilt — but quiet defiance.
Jungkook exhaled slowly, his jaw tightening. “Don’t blame yourself. People will believe what they want. We can’t change that.”
“He can hate me all he wants,” Jungkook said, voice steady despite the sting in his arm. “But I won’t let him hate you for being with me.”
Taehyung’s lips parted, but no words came. He could only look at Jungkook, heart trembling — because even in his ruin, even when the world called him wrong, Jungkook made him feel like he wasn’t.
But even as he said it, something heavy lingered between them — the weight of judgments, of misunderstandings, of a bond that the world had already decided to twist into something shameful.
And though neither admitted it, both knew: this was only the beginning of the storm.
