Candles, Beer and Trouble

The apartment smelled faintly of vanilla and instant noodles, a combination that somehow felt homey. Taehyung had insisted on lighting three of the ten candles he bought earlier, even though Kook warned, “You’ll set this place on fire.”

“But it’s cozy!” Taehyung grinned, waving a matchstick like it was a magic wand. “See? Kookie, cozy!”

Jungkook groaned, dropping into the chair across from him. “I’m going to regret being your housemate, I just know it.”

That weekend, they went out again. Taehyung skipped between aisles like a kid let loose in a candy store, dragging Jungkook behind him.

“Look at this blanket! It’s so soft. Kookie, touch it!”
“I’m not touching every blanket in this store, Tae.”
“But this one feels like… clouds. Clouds, Jungkookie. Do you want me to freeze to death?”

Jungkook sighed and tossed it into the cart. He was getting way too used to this.

By the time they reached the small restaurant, Taehyung had already ordered a couple of beers. One glass made his cheeks flush a warm pink. Two made him hum gleefully, swinging his legs under the table. By the third, he was practically a tornado of energy, leaning across Jungkook, hiccupping, and making loud proclamations.

“You’re my Kookie! My grumpy, strong, handsome Kookie!” Taehyung slurred, giggling as if saying it aloud was the funniest thing in the world.

Heads turned. Jungkook wanted the ground to swallow him whole. Also making a mental note to not let this boy drink again.

When Taehyung nearly toppled over trying to reach for more fries, Jungkook grabbed his wrist. “You’re impossible.”
Taehyung pouted dramatically. “Nooo. I’m adorable.” He then smacked his cheeks lightly with his palms and announced: “See? Cuteness overload!”

Jungkook had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing.

The walk back was worse. Taehyung refused to walk straight, instead swinging their joined hands (when had he grabbed Jungkook’s hand??) and humming some off-key tune.

At one point he stopped, squinting up at the night sky. “You know why I like stars, Kookie?”
Jungkook adjusted his grip on Taehyung, trying to keep him from falling. “Why?”
“Because… they’re like you. They don’t leave, even when it’s dark.”

Jungkook’s chest clenched. Taehyung’s words were drunk, silly, maybe even forgotten by morning… but they sank deep into him.

Taehyung held onto Jungkook’s arm, stumbling slightly. “Wait, Kookie… do you think stars are jealous of people?”
Jungkook blinked. “…Why would stars be jealous?”
“Because…” Taehyung tilted his head, swaying gently, “they sparkle, but they don’t get to hug anyone like this.” He hugged Jungkook’s arm tighter, then hiccuped. “You’re my best, Kookie. Don’t ever leave me, okay?”

Jungkook’s chest tightened. He whispered, heart hammering, “I’m not going anywhere, Tae.”

By the time they got back, Taehyung had completely collapsed onto the couch, blanket tangled around his legs, cheeks flushed from too many candles and too much beer. He let out a soft, sleepy hum, half-laughing at a joke only he seemed to remember.

Jungkook sat down beside him, heart thudding. Taehyung’s head lolled slightly, and without thinking, Jungkook reached over and tucked a stray lock of hair behind his ear. Taehyung mumbled something incoherent, eyes fluttering shut, and leaned, just a little, against Jungkook’s shoulder.

It was brief, accidental maybe, but Jungkook froze. His chest felt tight in the best and worst way. He swallowed, forcing his heartbeat to calm. Taehyung was asleep, utterly oblivious, trusting him completely.

Jungkook whispered softly, brushing the hair once more.
“Sleep well… my pretty boy.”

No response, of course. Taehyung’s lips curved in a tiny, peaceful smile. Jungkook’s hand lingered just above his arm, not moving, not wanting to disturb the fragile warmth of the moment.

He didn’t know why it hurt so much. He didn’t know why his stomach tightened, why his chest ached, why… he wanted to stay like this forever.

But for now, he would just protect this sleepy, messy, adorable boy. Make him smile. Keep him safe. And maybe, one day, when Taehyung finally understood his own heart… Jungkook would be ready to let the rest of the truth slip out.
