[ 37 ] 2013

On the way back to school, Luke grinned at Phoenix, who was sat on the front passenger seat. He had been planning to break up with Hazel soon, but since she had been the one to end the relationship, he would take advantage of his new freedom to ask out the next new girl at St. Genevieve's. As soon as he got to school, he would need to spread the word about their break up, leaving out the part where Hazel had broken up with him. Luke was known to be the one to break up with girls, not the other way around, and he didn't want to ruin his reputation.

"Hey Phoebes," He smiled, glancing at her from the corner of his eye. The girl with jet black hair had been looking out the window, distracted, and she turned in his direction. When he was sure her attention was on him, he continued, "Do you want to be my girlfriend?"

Phoebe seemed to think about it, which confused Luke.

What did she have to think about?

He was the most popular guy at St. Genevieve's. Everyone liked him. Being with Luke would assure that she would be the most popular girl at school.

When she finally formulated a response to his request, he was startled by what she said. "Uhm...I'm really sorry, Luke." Her face crinkled up into a mix of pity and nervousness. Of course she thought he was handsome, but she had heard so many stories about him and she knew Luke Hemmings couldn't be trusted when it came to relationships. "I think you're great, and I have a lot of fun when I'm with you. But..."

"But what?" He cut her off, outraged.

"I know how guys like you are." She told him bluntly. "You like girls who resist you. You become obsessed with them and pressure them until they accept to date you. Then once you've gotten what you want, you discard them like garbage. Isn't that what you just did to Hazel? I can't be with someone like that."

By now, Luke had pulled into the school parking lot and cut the engine off. But the outrage in his words remained, "But it was okay for you to lead me on like this?"

Phoenix shrugged. "You needed a taste of your own medicine. And besides, I'm in love with another guy. Someone who doesn't play with women's feelings."

"Who?" Luke wondered. "Someone back in Perth?"

He couldn't bare to lose to anyone, especially someone he didn't know.

The girl with jet black hair shook her head. "Your best friend; Harley's brother. Billy Quinn."

With that, she pushed the passenger door open and got out of his car, leaving him there in shock. Though Billy Quinn was dating Cindy and had showed no interest in Phoenix, Luke felt betrayed by the boy he called his best friend.

And like Hazel, he wanted to seek revenge.

The final bell rang that afternoon at St. Genevieve's and the teacher's dismissed their students. When everyone emerged out of class, they were met with a strange sight before them. Plastered all over the walls were flyers with a picture of Luke and Phoenix at lunch earlier in the day. Beneath the photograph, in large red letters were the words: Luke Hemmings is a cheater!

Harley picked one of the flyers up and looked to her best friend. "Phoenix, what did you do?"

"Nothing!" Phoenix replied, horrified.

The students that passed them by took one look at the picture and then looked at her, murmuring to each other that she had been the one to take Luke from Hazel. Now she was known all over St. Genevieve's as a boyfriend stealer.

On this day, Luke had the same last period class with Hazel and she hadn't showed up to class. He thought her in the toilets, crying over the break up, but when he saw the flyers, he knew it was her doing. He had set himself up for it when he sent her the picture.

He walked the hallways, snatching the flyers from people holding them and muttering about him. The students of St. Genevieve's weren't surprised that he had been caught, they were surprised that an ex girlfriend of his would get revenge on him that way. All girlfriends he had previous to Hazel had done nothing when he dumped them.

The blonde haired boy saw his ex girlfriend strutting down the hallway victoriously, on her way to the exit. But he grabbed her arm to stop her.

"What the hell is this, Hazel?" He asked her.

She shrugged her shoulders and shot him a very cynical smile. "I have no idea."

"Don't give me that." He hissed, shaking her slightly. "I know you did this because you're hurt that I left you."

Pulling her arm out of his grip, she finally let her anger at him show. "Get over yourself, Luke. I have better things to do with my life than to be here, watching your every move. It doesn't matter to me who you date because we're over."

Luke wasn't convinced by her words. "If I find out this was you, I'll-"

"You'll what?" She challenged, crossing her arms over her chest. "I'm not scared of you Luke."

"You better be." He told her, his blue eyes dark with anger.

That was when Michael stepped in between them, stepping in front of Hazel protectively. "Leave Hazel alone." He warned.

"Stay out of this, Michael." Luke glared at the hunter.

"Then you stay away from Hazel." Michael said in a menacing tone.

Luke only rolled his eyes at him and threw the handful of flyers he had collected, at them. He stormed off, muttering, "Fuck this. I need to find Cindy so we can get out of here."

Michael turned to Hazel, whose expression immediately changed and she let out a tired sigh. Placing a hand on Michael's shoulder, she said, "Thank you for helping me with this." She gestured to all the flyers on the floor. While all the administration was at lunch, John was on duty, and Michael helped convince him to allow them to use the printers in the office. Then John, Michael, and Hazel had gone around the school during the last period and covered as much of the walls as they could. "I would have never been able to do that without you."

The hunter smiled at her. "Anything to help you feel better, Haze."

She smiled back at him, but it was a half smile. Whether she had truly loved Luke or not, it still didn't feel good to have been cheated on.

"Lets go home." She said to Michael.

"Don't you have cheerleading practice?" Michael wondered.

She nodded, "Yeah, but I'm not in the mood to pretend to be peppy. I think the squad will understand."

The two then walked side by side out to the parking lot where Jack was there waiting for them. They had gotten a ride to school with Paul and Dempsey, but since Paul had to stay as the assistant soccer coach, Michael had messaged Jack to pick them up when the final bell rang.

It seemed that all the problems at St. Genevieve's had been caused by Phoebe Nixon.
