***Hazel POV***

"So that wasn't as awkward as I expected it," I admit. We are standing in the elevator.

"Told you so!"

"You did not!"

"Did too!"

"Fine whatever I can't remember," I reply exasperated.

"Oh sure you can't!"

"Whatever floats your boat."

"I'm right one point for me."

"We are gonna keep score now?" I ask while I cross my arms.

"Yep and I'm on a roller coaster that goes no where, but up my friend." He says as he slings his arm around me. It feels nice but also weird.

"Actually you are on an elevator going down to the ground level. Get it right."

"Well aren't you sassy!"

"Look!" I point at the arrow in the elevator to go to the floor! "It's a down arrow and we have arrived to the ground level by going down!" We get out of the elevator.

"Yep. You are very sassy!"

"Thank you for that!"

"You know your beautiful."

"Uh...thank you."

"Your welcome." We exit the hospital and we are silent. It isn't awkward, it's surprisingly comfortable. Then I realize his arm is still around me.

"Is that why you've been so nice to me?" I move his arm from around my shoulders. All the pieces seem to be falling into place. He was going to use me. He thought I was oblivious, because I was the new girl. He was right it took me almost twelve hours. I am so stupid.

"What?"

"You were going to use me!"

"What! No!"

"Yes you were!"

"No I would never do that to anyone!"

"I was just the new girl that doesn't know anything about anyone!"

"I was trying to be nice, because you need a friend in school."

"Yeah like you didn't have another motive!" We are now caught up in a yelling match.

"I didn't!"

"Sure you didn't! You're a guy you only want one thing!"

"I want to go to college and leave this town! You want to know my goals! I want to be valedictorian, basketball MVP and captain, and get some of my college courses out the way by taking duel credits!" He is yelling, and I'm not gonna lie it's scary.

"Really?" I say in disbelief.

"I've only ever had two girlfriends! I don't use people. And I have a limit which is probably why I'm still a virgin."

"No you're not."

"I think I would know. Check this out." He picks up a stick and draws a circle in the parking lot gravel.

"Okay, it's a circle."

"Not just any circle, but the circle of virgins." He draws another smaller circle inside the big one.

"And what's that?" I ask.

"That's people like me. People who have goals in life and don't want an STD." He replies.

"Makes sense. I would be part of that circle."

"Cool."

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I don't know what came over me!"

"You were probably scared by the Ben incident."

"That was terrifying."

"I was scared for you."

"Gus?" I say in a soft voice.

"What?"

"Thank you for caring."

"That's my job."

"It is?"

"That's a conversation for another time."

"Okay," I decide not to push the matter.

"Okay." We stand there awkwardly for a moment.

"I should probably head home."

"Your parents are probably worried."

"They shouldn't be."

"But your with some random guy from your first day of school."

"True, but I didn't say guy. I said friend."

"So you would consider me a friend?"

"Of course."

"Good," I'm leaning against my car, and he is against his truck.

"It is the start of a beautiful friendship."

"That's only because you are in it." He grins. I blush, ad I turn a bright red while he chuckles.

"Thanks." He steps toward me. And he gets closer until he is practically on top of me. I know my face must be getting brighter, redder, and hotter.

"Am I making you uncomfortable?" He chuckles.

"No I just turn another color as a talent of mine."

"Oh good then." He presses his forehead to mine. Then he kisses me. His lips are soft and warm, it send tingles down my spine. "Good night." I'm completely dumbstruck. He turns around and gets in his truck.

"Wait what?"

"Have a good night Hazel Grace Lancaster."

"You too Augustus Waters." I stand there stunned, as he drives away.
