Adina's POV

"Katherine stop shitting me and tell me where my beer is!"

"No! I won't let you continue down this road like this, Drew! We have two kids who need us! Not just one working mom and a drunk dad. What ever happen to us being a team?"

"Oh just shut up and tell me where my fucking beer is!"

"No!"

A slap is heard in the dead silence that follows after my mother voice. I hush Adelina as she whimpers soft 'Mamas'.

"Ow, Drew, stop hurting me!"

We hear our mothers shrill voice scream. I flinch as I hold my baby sister to my side as we hear a hard thud downstairs.

"Mama!" My two year old sister shrieks. I place my hand over her mouth.

"You can't yell like that Lena! Daddy will hurt us if you speak to loud," I whisper to her. She nods her head as tears stream from her bright blue eyes. We continue to sit in the upstairs closet for at least an hour as we hear the sounds of or mothers screams and our dads yells for her to quiet down because the neighbors will hear.

I try my best to console my sister as this happens, wishing I could somehow block out their bantering to each other.

"Its okay Lena, I'll get us out of here in no time, you just wait," I whisper in her ear, hugging her close to me.

When there's finally no sound down the stairs, I see that as my chance to come out of our hiding spot .

"Stay here and I'll come and get you When the coast is clear, okay?" I question urgently. She nods her head quickly, fear taking over her eyes.

I hesitantly walk down our spiral staircase, gripping the wired railing as I make my presence known. What I found before my eyes, is something I wish I un-see.

My mothers lifeless body is on the ground with her blood pooling around her stomach as my dad hovers over her with a knife in his bruised knuckle that suggested he had beaten my mother before her death.

I guess I must have made a noise because he turned toward me his breathing heavy in the silent air. I gulp as I see his ruff looking face. I can't believe the monster in front of me used to be the nice sweet man who I was proud to call my father, is the person who killed my mother.

"Leave this house now and never come back." My dad says, his voice never raising above a harsh grunt.

"You... Killed her, didn't you? How?... How could you take my mom away from us, I can't -" I begin but his loud booming voice rings out before I can finish.

"Take your sister and get out of here now!" I shakily turn around about to leave, when his careless hand pulls me back to face him.

"You tell no one about this, you hear me!" He advised to me. I gulp and nod my head, hurrying myself up the stairs to grab my sister who was fast asleep on the hard wood floor of the closet. Grabbing her, I make a mad dash to get out of there.

Reaching the living room, I place a delicate hand on the back of Adelina's head and walk out the door of our childhood home. Once outside I look at the tan house with white pillars in front that once held love but now, that just seemed like a far away dream.

With my adrenalin still at its high I use my remaining energy to run into the woods where I collapsed by a large willow tree that is surrounded by yellow patches of grass and held Adelina close to me, while running my hand through her blond hair. she resembled more of our mother while I took more after my dad with my light brown hair and light brown eyes.

After a while of sitting in the dead silence, a sudden sadness overtook me as I realised I'd never have a big warm hug from my mother again. I'd never get to hear her melodic laugh or sing carelessly around the house. I'd never get to do anything with her because my dad took that away from me all in one night.

Before I know it, sobs racked my body and shook it with great force waking my sister.

"Dina?" She asks in her soft baby voice. I try to control my sobs as I talk to her but it comes out in heavy gasps.

"Yeah, baby?" I look down at her and see her tired face trying to keep her eyes open.

"Why you crying?"

"Because I'm sad," I explain.

"Why?" I let a frustrated breath because I didn't want to explain to her our father killed our mother.

"Just because Adelina!" I yell making her flinch and stick her bottom lip out.

"I sowy, Dina. I just want to see you happy again," her little voice wavers and I instantly feel guilty for yelling at her when it wasn't her fault.

"No I'm sorry, sis. I shouldn't have yelled at you like that," I watch as her little mouth opens to a yawn and I smile gently at her. "Go to sleep baby," I murmur as she snuggles closer to me.

"Okay sissy," after her breaths come out steadied and slow, I sit there by the tree wishing I'd brought a coat because it was really cold. Guess I should have known with Michigan being famous for its crazy weather and all. Even in the beginning of summer!

After what seems like a long time, sleep decides to take me away from the days events for the night.
