Adina's POV
Staring back at me is the cold harsh eyes of my father, if he even deserves that title after what he did to our Mother.
I am frozen to my seat when I watch the cynical smirk on his face widen, loving the affect he had on me under his careful watch.
"Adina, sweetheart, you okay there?" Demi asked, seeing my reaction. I shake my head to rid my thoughts and possibly his existence. I give a shaky smile back to her that she returns hesitantly.
"I'm good, I just need... To use the bathroom real quick," I assure, standing to leave. She nods, and stands to follow, "I'll come with you," she willingly offers.
I'm quick to shake my head. "No thanks, I can handle the bathroom on my own," I snap. I dart off to the bathrooms before she can answer. On the way, I'm immediately grabbed by a arm and brought inside a maintenance closet before I can even make a sound.
I make a move to gasp, but a hand is quick to cover my mouth before I have the chance. I follow the arm that has me captive and see that it is none other than my father.
"Hello daughter," he tells me, his voice low and gruff as if he hasn't used it in a while. I roll my eyes, but that just earns me a slap to the cheek. I've been so accustomed to this standard that I don't even bat an eyelash at the stinging that comes with it.
"Now, don't go misbehaving before me now that you had a taste of freedom. I'm still your elder," he condones.
"Yeah, because your someone I should really look up to," I scoff, shaking his grip he had on me off.
I go to open the door, when I'm being pushed against the wall once more. His breath hot on my face with the all to familiar smell of whiskey wafting through. His teeth are gritted and his face holds a menacing scowl.
"I'm going to ask you to keep your mouth quiet while I talk to you because let's not forget who holds the power here, little girl." He seethes. I gulp but nod my head that I understood. Instead of releasing the grip he had on my arm, he tightens it to where I'm pretty sure it will leave a nice size bruise.
"I need you to keep your mouth shut about what happen at that house, you hear? I don't need cops running around me trying to get me in jail,"
"You deserve to rot there as far as I'm concerned," I spit out. This earns a swift punch to my gut. I hold a groan in to keep from pleasing him to see me in pain.
"Now honey, the only rotting going on is your mothers corpse on our basements rug," he teases. This is enough to make me lash out. I get a good uppercut to his mouth before I'm brought to my knees on the ground from the kick he delivered to my legs.
"If I see a cop anywhere near me, I'll know where to find you and your little sister,"
"You stay the hell away from her! You can use me as your own personal punching bag, but you do not go anywhere near Adelina!"
"Then I trust you'll keep this just between the two of us?" I'm stuck between wanting to see his ass rotting in jail or protecting my sister from his ways. I wish I had the power to make this all go away.
"F-Fine," I stutter feeling defeated. He smirks before giving me one last good kick to the back.
"Now that that's settled, I guess I have no reason to be within two feet of you. Toodles," and with that I'm left on the ground of the dark closet surrounded by my racing thoughts.
What had I just done?
***
I finally decide that I should pick myself up off the floor and head back to the table. When I walk out of the closet I come face to face with Demi who was just getting out of the bathroom across from the closet.
"Adina! There you are, I was worried I'd lost you," she exclaims taking me into her arms as if to keep me from disappearing before her eyes.
"I was just in the bathroom..." I lie. She seems to pick up on this and releases me from the hug holding me at arms length.
"Are you lying to me?" She has an eyebrow perfectly arched and I have to look away from her intense stare.
"No?" I try my voice raising up an octave. She purses her lips.
"Mm-hm," she grabs my hand and leads me back to the table.
"Dina!" Adelina shouts, effectively gathering the attention from other people. Demi's cheeks take on the look of a tomato as she grabs Adelina's hand too.
"I think we had enough of an outing today, how bout we go back home for some movies and snuggles!" She says excitedly.
"I wove snuggles!" Adelina matches her enthusiasm and starts to skip in front of us. Demi looks over to Max who had been trailing us and signals him to follow her. While he goes after her, Demi looks to me and tightens her grip on my hand.
"So you want to tell me what really went on there?" She's quick to say. I shrug going for the clueless act.
"Don't pull that dumb act on me little girl, tell me now," she demands, stopping our walk to take me by the shoulders. I hold a wince in and break away from her.
"There's nothing to talk about," I claim, walking ahead.
"You sure?" She tries again, catching up.
"Positive." I lie. She nods her head and soon a smile replaces her serious facade.
"Then I trust you," she decides. As if letting a murderer continue his life in stride wasn't bad enough, I just broke my soon to be 'mother's trust all in the same day.
Demi's POV
I watch Adina as she glances out the car window, caught up in the scenery as we past by. My thoughts racing to what I'm going to do with her.
I knew she was lying, call it mothers intuition or a crazy supermom power, but I felt in my gut she was lying, not sure why she would, though.
In the silence of the car I hear a quiet groan come from her and am quick to address her with my concern.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing," she dismiss'.
"No don't do that, it must be important if it's causing you pain... let me take a look," I ask as I see her hold her arm.
"No, I have-"
"Just let me look!"
"No!" just as she tells me this, I life her sleeve of the shirt she's wearing to notice a fresh bruise on her forearm.
"What the..." I mumble to myself as I look into her calculating eyes.
"I-I fell at t-the mall,"
"Why are you lying again? Are you afraid of me?" I croaked out feeling afraid of the answer.
"No-"
"Then why are you acting like this?" I'm quick to interject. "You should know by now you can trust me, and I will help you with what ever you are feeling or dealing with... It's kinda my thing," I joke lightly.
She seems to think on this and is about to say something when Max, who was driving us, calls to us that we are at my summer house.
Adina bolts out the second the car stops and is inside the house faster then I can call out to her.
"Glad we had that talk..." I uttered more to myself.
Max walks up beside me with Adelina and sets her on the ground with the instruction of going inside the house.
"Speaking of talks, can we discuss what exactly your doing with these kids and the possibility of the paps hearing about this kidnapping..."
