Dear reader,
This is Veronica Ivory Rose Mortalitas. If you are reading this I have been captured and it is very likely that I have met with a terrible fate. If that is the case and I have met my fate there is a story you must hear.
I am not an ordinary human, as most have thought in the past. At this time I have seen 50,000 years go by and I will see many more pass, but it will be from within a cell. I am on the run and I don't have much time to tell you my story. In order for you to know how important this is I must start from the beginning.
When I was still quite young, about 17 years of age, I found a leather bound book wrapped in the mail addressed to me. For some reason I felt like I needed to hide it. I went into my room and locked the door. I unwrapped the book, the cover was leather and it had a dragon's likeness engraved into it. Where the dragon's eye should have been there was a small stone. I opened the book and a note fell out, I opened the note and read what it said:
Dear Veronica,
You and I have never met, I must ask you to take the stone out of the cover before you read on. This book holds many secrets and power comes with your knowledge and understanding of these secrets. This book will turn you into something else. I will ask you many things throughout this book. Every time you open it make sure you have the stone with you. Everything in this book is real and at times it will be hard to believe but you must understand that all of this is very serious. You will have to leave your mother and the one you call friend, when you do this I will come to you. This stone is not a stone in fact it is a dragon's egg. The hatchling inside has chosen you to be it's companion. You will learn spells, ways to teach and care for your dragon, and most of all you will learn the truth about yourself and the world around you. You will not have to be alone through all of this though. I will after your egg hatches, which should be very soon. The two of you will have to find your strong suits together and you will never be separated. You are the last of us and this book was written with the knowledge of all of us through time. This book was written for you and you only. I will see you soon.
Sincerely,
Your Mentor.
I quickly closed the book and took the stone out of the cover taking care not to crack it and I looked at it closely. "This can't be a dragon's egg. I mean dragons aren't real... right? ... Well what if they are real and this really is one of the eggs.... I'll figure it out tomorrow." I placed the book on my nightstand and the stone under my pillow before I turned out the lights and lay down to sleep.
That night I just laid there and stared at the ceiling. I couldn't sleep so I turned on my lamp and began reading the first chapter of the book. It really did seem like it was written for me.
In the first chapter it said that the dragon resting in the stone, which was really an egg, would hatch the first night it was in it's chosen protector's hands. It also said that when the dragon hatched it would leave a unique mark that no other companion would have. You must also name and feed your hatchling. Well I guess it's a lot like a huge dog.
The next morning I place the stone into a , so that I can keep it with me and I won't lose it. I walk into the kitchen and I grab something to eat, my mother was sitting at the table talking on the phone. After I grabbed the bread and butter for my toast she hung up and looked at me. "We missed you at dinner last night and then we couldn't get your door open. Were you feeling okay?"
"Yes mother, I was just tired and wanted to be left alone."
"Okay sweetie." My mother smiled at me and I can still remember how white her teeth were. "Are you going to eat with us?"
"Us?"
"Yeah, Rick spent the night." I knew he was staying for dinner but I didn't know he was staying the night. Richard is my mother's newest boyfriend. He's always over and he annoys the hell out of me, anytime I say something to mother about it she says, 'Oh he's just trying to be nice and let you know that if we do get really serious that he's not going to try to replace your dad.'
"Um..." Right then Richard walks in and my mother gives me the 'please be nice' look, "Sure I'll eat with y'all."
"That's great V." Richard hugs me smiling.
"Don't call me that." I don't hug him back hoping that when I stiffened he would get the point and let go. "Richard please let me go."
"Sorry, I'm just happy that you're finally warming up to me." He lets me go while still smiling.
"I'm not eating with y'all because I'm 'warming up to you' I'm doing it because it would make my mother asked me to and... my room is a mess."
"VERONICA!!!"
I wince at the disapproval in her voice, "I'm sorry mother but would you rather I lie about my motives?"
She sighs and looks at Richard, " I just wish you would give him a chance instead of being so... so..."
"Horribly honest, hateful, distrusting, a teenager?" Mother opens her mouth to speak but I storm to my room. I want nothing to do with Richard, I've tried my best to be nice to him for my mother but I can't.
