For several hours I sat in my room and read through the book. As I was reading it wasn't like normally reading it was more like having a conversation with someone, any time a question would arise in my mind it would be answered shortly after.
Every time there was a switch in writers, due to the fact that the last one died, they would greet me, tell me a little about themselves, and then continue to give me more information about my quest. Every single time, every author warns me that something big is coming and that I am their last hope to defeat our king, Crastor.
I'm nearing the middle of the book when Mother opens the door. I quickly slam the book shut and hide it under my pillow. "Come eat lunch. What were you doing?"
"Oh nothing." I give her an innocent smile, "I'll be down in a moment, Mother." She nods and leaves me in my room. " What would Mother say if she knew the truth? Would she just dismiss it as rubbish?" I tread down the stairs and into the kitchen.
I watch as Mother glides into the kitchen and hugs Richard, who is cooking, "What are you making, honey?"
I roll my eyes and take a seat at the table, "Grilled cheese and don't worry V it will be ready soon."
Sighing to myself I just sit there thinking about all the knowledge I've gained just by reading less than half of the book. I have learned that Castor, whom is a traitor to his own kind, has hidden everything that he has done so us human believe that he is a wonderful king. I live in the capitol so his influences are greater here. The people who live in the smaller towns and in the towns on the outskirts know of his treachery and have dealt with his ruthlessness for many many years.
I keep trying to understand how the great beast, they make a dragon out to be, could fit into the tiny stone in my necklace. They said that before the dragon hatches the stone will grow in size. It seems that the author of the part I was reading, before Mother came up to my room, is going to die soon. His handwriting is getting shaky and from what I've read they all get shaky handwriting before they die. They keep telling me that I'm their last hope and that I need to know who and what my father is, but they never tell me anything about him.
Mother's sweet voice shakes me from my thoughts, "You alright, V?"
I notice that Richard is sitting across from me with Mother. I see that Richard has set a plate of food in front of me. "Yes, I was just lost in thought. Mother, can you tell me about Father?"
She stops mid bite and her gaze jumps to my face and I can see Richard stiffen as if he doesn't like that topic. "Why the sudden curiosity?"
"I was just thinking, I've never really heard a lot about him." I try to sound as innocent as possible.
"I don't know a lot about him, he was a spring fling and I never saw him after that." She says it swiftly and I know by now that she's lying but for some reason that lie seems to put Richard at ease.
I pick up my sandwich and take a small bite, this tastes awful! "Okay." I spend the next few moments forcing the ash like sandwich down my throat. I feel an intense heat coming from my necklace and when I look at it the stone is glowing. "Mother, may I excuse myself?"
She nods and I take off up the stairs and I rip the necklace of tossing it on my bed, anything to get the heat away from my body. The stone continues to glow but now it's growing. It grows and grows until it's about the size of a small pup and while watching it I sit on the bed beside it.
Cracks start to form on the surface and I can hear a knocking coming from within. It shakes and small pieces fall from it letting out steam and with it more heat. A small scaly head pushes it's way out of the egg. I smile softly at the small creature that I will become a companion to. "Come on out." I keep my voice as soft as I can, trying to hide my disbelief.
I lets out a small choking sound, that reminds me slightly of a baby's laugh, it pushes himself fully out of the egg. It wobbles over to me and crawls up my arm. It wraps it's long tail around my forearm and it digs it's claws into my arm as well. I wince in pain and close my eyes, I need to push the pain away. I feel a warm, rough piece of flesh run across the places where it's claws punctured my skin. I open my eyes to see it licking the blood spots.
It climbs down into my lap and curls up. I look at my right arm and there is a scar on my arm that circles my forearm and it looks like a tribal thing. I look at the dragon curled up in my lap, "Are you male?"
It nods and yawns, "Hmm, what do you think of Claud?" We both shake our heads at the same time, "Yeah, I don't like it. I'm thinking Lastrance, what do you think?" He nods and yawns again.
"V, please come down here!!!" Lastrance walks over to my pillow and lays down.
"Coming Mother! Stay right there and stay quiet." I throw on a jacket to hide my mark and I rush down stairs to see Mother standing in the open door way.
"Do you know this man?"
I see a tall man with a large scar going up his arm. He gives me a gentle smile and I feel like I know him from somewhere, "Hello Miss Mortalitas."
