CHAPTER ONE

A tall boy with an untidy shock of black hair and round rimmed glasses casually made his way towards the barrier between Platforms 9 and 10 rolling an old red trunk in a cart with one hand and carrying a covered bird cage with the other. Muggle girls turned to look at him appreciatively as he passed them by before looking away and continuing what they'd been doing.

Harry was completely unaware of the looks he was receiving. He'd never been one to give much thought to his appearance unless it regarded either his lightening shaped scar or rebellious hair which seemed to defy gravity and stick out every which way no matter what he did. He stopped short before he reached the barrier and looked around to make sure he wasn't being watched before walking forward quickly and vanishing into thin air.

A little girl sucking on a lollipop and clutching her mum's hand just happened to glance in his direction and gaped in astonishment at the disappearing boy, her sweet falling out of her mouth.

Harry was suddenly surrounded by the familiar sights and sounds of Platform nine-and-three-quarters. He had about five minutes to spare before the train was due to depart. Most of the carriages were full and he passed them by waving a 'hello' to the few people who noticed him. He made his way through the crowd until he found an empty compartment. He heaved both his trunk and owl cage through the train door and tucked them in one corner. That's when he sat down only to see that just opposite him, sitting quietly in a corner scowling at him, was none other than Draco Malfoy.

When Draco had told both Crabbe and Goyle to leave him because he wanted to be alone, he'd never expected that ten minutes later Harry Potter, the boy who despised him, would be sitting right across from him. In a train compartment. For a four hour journey. Alone.

With no Crabbe, Goyle or audience to hide behind, Malfoy was at a loss for words. So he settled for pretending to ignore Potter hoping he'd do the same. There was the sound of a whistle and soon afterwards the train started to pull out of the station.

Harry had really grown much taller over the holidays from what Draco could see. As usual when alone with his thoughts of Harry, Draco felt himself flush a little. He could never help remembering and cringing at the memory of when he'd first met Harry knowing who he was and how he'd offered his hand in friendship only to have it tossed back in his face because Harry preferred to keep company with the likes of WEASLEY and that Granger girl rather than with a respectable pure-blooded wizard. At this point Draco's feelings always shifted from embarrassment to anger.

He watched the passing scenery as the train progressed on it's journey. He'd done his best over the years to insult Potter everytime he saw him, make fun of him every chance he got because then at least he knew that he was on Harry's mind even if it was because of hatred. Draco could not bear the idea that while he thought of Harry almost constantly that he wasn't even important enough to register in Harry's thoughts.

He was jealous of everyone who got to talk to Harry, everyone he smiled out, everyone who made him laugh. It had taken a long while for Draco to understand that his feelings for Harry went far beyond getting revenge for being snubbed all those years ago. And when he HAD realized this he'd redoubled all his efforts in getting Harry to hate him. He'd succeeded but it didn't change a thing: Draco was in love with Harry.
