There was once a king who lived in a castle deep in the woods. He had everything he could want—a beautiful, honorable, amusing queen and every treasure money could buy. Many looked at the king's life with awe, wishing to learn his secrets, to emulate his kingdom for themselves.
But the riches and the power were a facade. A front for a gaping void in his soul that had to be filled. How could it be filled when he wore it on his arm like armor, like ammunition for the war he fought against his conscience every day?
Now, the king had been stripped of his castle, his riches, and his queen. The void he had paraded like a badge now stared at him, mocking and derisive.
You will never amount to anything, it whispered. You are nothing without me.
Though he knew, deep down, the void would ruin him, he was not yet ready to slay it. A piece of him held relentlessly on to the hope that he would rebuild his kingdom again.
And he would find his queen. Yes, she would be his again, and this time . . . these bars he faced would be nothing compared to the ones he trapped her with.
