Damn my head was pounding. What the hell had happened? Why did it hurt so much? Had I fallen down the stairs? No I didn’t remember that.
And wait what was that smell? It was almost a musty smell. Where was I? I slowly cracked one eye open and looked around. Everything was dingy looking in the dim light that illuminated the small room. I looked around. I was in a small bedroom. There were windows high up near the celling.
I slowly sat up. And as I did the events from before came rushing back to me in a tidal wave that made me gasp. The shots. The school. Harry. Everything.
I looked around the small basement bedroom and I hadn’t noticed before but there was a figure sitting against one of the walls opposite me.
I skittered away and pressed myself up against the wall in an attempt to get away from the person.
“Louis it’s me. I’m not going to hurt you.” Harry’s voice called out across the small space. His voice. It sounded so normal. How could he be the same Harry that I knew but also the same boy I had seen almost shoot Eleanor? I remembered the hard look in his eyes as he had stormed into the class with a gun.
I shook my head. “No, no Harry it’s not you,” I said. I had tears falling from my eyes. God dammit I just wanted to go home. Was that too much to ask?
Harry moved forward out of the shadows and into the light. He had a hurt expression on his face. Like my words had caused him literal pain.
Although I could see how. Harry and I had been best friends since we were kinds. We would always be together playing, doing homework, everything. We told each other everything. That’s why I was the first person Harry had come to two years ago when he was ready to tell people he was gay.
I didn’t really care; he would still be my best friend no matter what. He had been relieved.
Even now we were still tight as ever. I mean except for recently. Harry had been distant. For the past few weeks he wouldn’t come over every Friday and he wouldn’t call as much. I only really saw him at lunch and even then he was always texting someone.
Oh God. Realization struck. This. He must have been planning this for weeks, texting what’s-his-name, Leighton or Leroy?
“Louis,” Harry said.
I looked away and stared at the floor. I couldn’t look at him.
He started to move closer placing a gentle hand on my arm. I felt my skin prickle sharply where his hand rested on my skin. My eyes snapped back to his. What the hell? My heart beat fast in my chest as I stared into Harry’s impossibly green eyes.
He opened his mouth about to say something else but the front door opened and slammed closed upstairs. There were angry footsteps sounding overheard and Harry cursed under his breath.
My eyes widened in fear. To be honest the other guy that was in car with Harry scared the shit out of me.
“Liam’s here,” Harry told me. He stood up and dusted his pants off. For a guy that had been sitting in a dusty basement he looked rather good. His dark blue jeans hung low on his hips and the white shirt he wore clung to his body in a way that showed off his muscles.
I shook my head. Why was I thinking like this?
I followed suit and stood up in the small bedroom. I glanced at the stairs that led up to what I was assuming was the main floor. At the top was a door. The footsteps were right outside it.
Just then the door handle jiggled and the door was thrust open. Liam came storming down the stairs. He glanced at Harry and then focused his sneering gaze on me.
“Harry, I thought you said you were going to do something about him,” he spoke to Harry but continued staring at me.
“I am Liam, however this is my house and I can do what I bloody well want to in it,” Harry spoke back, anger evident in his words.
Harry moved to stand slightly in front of me, shielding me from Liam. I took the opportunity to retreat further behind Harry, almost cowering behind him. The boy standing in front of me was a murderer! He had killed somebody! Somebody I could have known, who went to my school! He scared the shit out of me.
Liam saw me and let out a harsh bark of laughter.
“Oh, you think lover boy here is going to protect you?” Liam mocked.
My breathing picked up as he walked forward. Harry’s muscles tensed as Liam stood only a few inches away from Harry. Suddenly, Liam brought his fist back and it collided with Harry’s jaw. Harry’s body hurtled to the side as he stumbled to the floor.
I let out a scream as Liam came forward and grabbed the front of my t-shirt slamming me up against the wall.
“You do know that you could get us both in a lot of shit?” He whispered roughly. “If they find you then they find us. We already got murder on our heads, sure, but I don’t fucking need kidnapping!”
By that time he was yelling.
“So all I have to do to make sure we stay safe is kill you.” He said his lip curling.
The tears streamed relentlessly down my face. Why was this happening to me? What had I done to deserve this?
“Yeah but you’re not going to.” Liam whirred around to face Harry whose jaw was already tingeing a light shade of purple. He roughly grabbed Liam and he was forced to release his grip on me.
“Liam, I know we’re in this together I got that from the time I agreed to do this with you. But you do not have the right to hurt my friends and so help me god if you do I will kill you. He’s not going to turn us in or cause us to be found.” Harry said.
Liam smirked.
“Oh, Harry. You always were the romantic,” Liam chuckled. “Give it up, it’s a lost cause, mate. It’s not mutual.”
My brow furrowed in confusion. Romantic? What did that have to do with anything? And what wasn’t mutual?
“Get out,” Harry growled from beside me. “Get out now!”
Liam smirked and started to back up. “Don’t think I won’t kill him Harry, I will.”
“Get out!” Harry bellowed.
And with that he backed up towards the staircase, when he reached it he turned around and headed up. I could hear him pad across the floor upstairs and the front door slam shut.
As the sound reverberated down to my ears it snapped me out of my dazed stupor. I let a choked sob escape my lips. Harry strode over to me and went to wrap his arms around me in a hug but I shoved his chest back.
“Get away from me!” I screamed at him. “Don’t touch me! Just go away!”
I leaned against the wall as tears started to stream down my face. I curled up around myself wrapping my arms around my knees.
“I’m sorry, Louis but I did it for us,” Harry replied. I didn’t move. I knew he was my friend. Or at least he used to be. What had happened? What had changed?
I felt alone. I just wanted to go home. But I also felt the undying urge to be held by the shooter in front of me. My feelings only confused me more and mad me cry harder.
I distantly heard the door close as Harry left me alone in the basement.
