Chapter warnings: mentions of self-harm
Mary had never cried because of a guy. She barely cried about over anything. She cried when her parents died, when she was diagnosed with cancer, when she fell off her bike and got a really bad cut on her knee. But she never cried over another person, especially not some boy she had only been on one real date with.
But Harry wasn’t just some boy that she had only been on one real date with, she knew that. He was different than any guy she had ever met, or any person she had ever met. He was the first person to make her actually happy, and the first person to have something in common with her, the cutting thing. Harry Styles was obviously more than she had made him out to be at first. He was a real person, he had feelings, he didn’t sleep with every girl he met, he was intelligent, and he cared for her. And she messed it all up, she knew it was her fault.
Maybe if you just told him right away when you met, he would’ve left you alone and you could’ve continued with your life like it never happened. But noooo you had to go and get so damn attached. She was pretty much scolding herself as she walked into the penthouse apartment, tears still running down her face as she kicked off her shoes and threw her purse to the ground. You had to go and fall for someone you couldn’t have and then pretend like you could. That’s what happens when you try to live someone else’s life, you fall flat on your ass back into reality.
“Mar? Are you crying?”
Mary snapped her head up when she heard her older sister’s voice. “You’re” her voice cracked and she cleared her throat, “You’re not supposed to be home until tonight.”
Valerie was wearing her pajamas and her blonde hair was in a braid. She always had on mascara and blush, even when she was going to sleep. Her tan skin and her white teeth made her glow in the dark room, and her long legs towered her over Mary’s short body. This is the girl Harry should be with, not you.
“I stayed home sick. Why are you crying honey?” Valerie took her sister in her arms. She didn’t look sick, which meant that she probably just didn’t feel like going to work. This was typical Valerie, always pampering herself.
No that’s not fair, Mary thought as her sister brought her to the kitchen counter, seeing as how there still wasn’t a couch, she does so much for you. She doesn’t always think of herself.
And it was true, Valerie had done her best to take care of her little sister when her parents passed away, but she was so young. She wasn’t ready to deal with the responsibility of another person, especially not one who was sick in more ways than one. Mary knew she was a hassle, and that she sometimes, ok most times, acted difficult. But her sister was so different from her, who was Valerie to know that Mary didn’t want to deal with her pain and suffering by going to a club or having a day trip to the spa. Valerie was always the beauty queen in school, while Mary wasn’t exactly an outcast but from dealing with her illness she sort of pushed any kind of friendships aside. And her parents always knew how to deal with it, because they raised her. Valerie merely came to her graduation and visited her in the hospital, she didn’t know how to actual deal with her.
Mary, stop blaming everyone else. You need to stop thinking that just because people don’t understand you, that they won’t accept you.
“Will you tell me what’s wrong?” Valerie asked as Mary dried her tears on her sleeves and pulled herself together. She may as well tell her, now that it was over for good anyway.
“Harry and I…we had an argument” she started, not sure how to phrase what had happened, “He said that I was keeping secrets from him. I mean, I am, but it’s to protect him and his fans so it’s OK, right?” She looked at her sister for guidance.
