As he walked through the hallways, the decorations mocked him with their cheerful colors and heart-shaped cutouts. He watched as Grace blushed and giggled with her boyfriend, feeling the weight of loneliness settle heavily on his heart.
Shellington trudged over to his locker, feeling hopeless and lost. But then, out of nowhere, a small pink heart-shaped note fell out of his locker. His heart skipped a beat as he couldn't help but feel hopelessly devoted.

The bell rang for the end of the day and he and Pearl exited the school building and walked back home. Sanda was preparing birthday snacks for Pearl, who was turning sweet sixteen. Her friends had already given her small gifts at school. Sanda made Pearl's favorite snacks, red urchins and scallops. However, as Shellington cannot eat red urchins, she only made him scallops, which are a perfect addition to an otter's diet. Pearl and Shellington arrived home, put down their backpacks, and headed upstairs to change into comfortable clothes.

As Sanda laid out some tasty treats, Pearl and Shellington made their way downstairs and took a seat at the dining table. Shellington couldn't help but blush as he read over a love letter he had received, and his mom and sister couldn't help but notice.
"What's got you blushing so much?" Pearl asked, curious.
Shellington tried to play it cool, but his sister wasn't going to let it go that easily.
"Come on, spill the beans!" she urged, eager to know what secret her little brother was keeping.
