'Paging Doctor Robbins you are needed in Operating Room Two.'
I had my longest sleep in days despite the hospital's never-ending announcements and rainbow-colored codes. It was probably because of the very vivid dream I had---Ally made it to the rooftop that night after all. We introduced ourselves to each other--she was Batgirl and I was Fallen Angel. We had a candlelit dinner. We exchanged gifts. We danced under the stars. It was a perfect night and I even told her I am Pab.
But I heard Helen waking me up so I went back to reality--my girlfriend was in a car accident and has been unconscious for days. Ally was driving to meet me when a speeding truck countered the flow. According to the reports, she tried her best to avoid the collision but the truck was moving too fast. The impact could have been worse.
"Stevie, she has finally woken up," Helen said with tears of joy. "The doctor is there to check on her."
It was an overwhelming moment and I was just speechless. Helen and I shared an embrace.
"I will call Danny," I managed to say.
"Please do. And Stevie, she might want to see you soon."
"I will be there after this call." I am nervous to see Ally but I am relieved that she has finally woken up. Just when Helen walked away, I wept. Crying has been my response to almost anything right now--when Danny fetched me at the rooftop that night and told me about the accident, when I first saw Ally unresponsive, when Ally was crashing, or when Ally's vitals finally became stable.
I rang Danny and told him the good news.
"DANNY! GOOD NEWS! SHE'S AWAKE! I am about to see her after this call," I said. "How fast can you be here?"
"I will be there by lunch. I will just cancel my meetings in the afternoon," Danny responded. "Will you call me again after your lovey dovey moment? I want to scold that brat for making us worry big time. Ha-ha."
"I will. See you later, Danny!"
I anxiously walked towards Ally's room. I was still holding on the pizza ring and the lyrics that were found in her pockets that night--these served as my security, my hope.
"Finally Stevie's here!" Kimberly exclaimed as I entered. "Do you remember her now, Ally?"
Ally was staring blankly at me. This was not how she looked at me before. I felt my heart cringed.
"I am sorry, I still don't," Ally said. I did not know what was happening. I had a clue but I was hoping it was just a prank.
"Okay. I think that is enough for the day," the doctor said. "Mr. and Mrs. Hills, can I have a word outside?" David and Helen went out with the doctor. Kimberly excused herself to check on Hera.
"Hi, you are Stevie right? They said you and I have been very close," Ally said. "I am so sorry if I do not remember you."
"It's okay, pretty," I said, giving emphasis to possibly a trigger word just like what they do on TV. "Just take your time. Do not force yourself. I am just glad you are finally awake."
"You are so understanding, and well, beautiful too. Now I am understanding why we are friends."
"Ha-ha. Even in a hospital bed you are still hilarious." I wanted to cry again but I should not--not in front of her. How could she forget about me? "Well did they tell you that you are now a very accomplished singer? That's how we met--at Pab's--I work there too. So how far do you remember?" It was half of the truth, I know. But I need to make things simple for her right now.
"I am giving you full disclosure here--as far as I remember, I am dating Torey and she will be meeting me for my birthday weekend. I know the memory was already months ago. I probably had the best birthday. I am very much confident that we are still together. Did someone already reach her?"
"Oh that far ago. Let me check with Helen or Danny about that. Torey and I have not been introduced though. By the way Danny wants to talk to you on the phone. He will be here in a while. He is just caught up with a meeting. Is that okay with you?"
"Of course."
"Please excuse me for a bit," I said and walked out the room.
The tears instantly fell and I forced it to stop. I wanted to tell her that Torey broke up with her on her birthday that year, that she will gatecrash Hannah's party because she was mending her broken heart, and that we would meet as if the universe conspired to make it happen. But I could not.
I dialed in Danny.
"Hey Danny. Ally is fine and is already her usual self, just joking around," I said.
"That's good to know! So can you hand in the phone to her?" Danny responded.
"There's one more thing--she lost her memory."
"Stevie is this a prank to get back on me?"
"No... she remembers she is dating Torey."
"Oh."
"And I told her we met at Pab's."
"But did you tell her you are dating?"
"No."
"Stevie--"
"It makes things simpler.."
"But not for you."
"I am fine, Danny. I will give the phone to Ally now. Please do not say anything."
Ally was still alone in her room when I entered. She was watching her music video in Youtube--trying to learn the lyrics and the tune.
"Here's Danny," I said and handed her the phone.
I went out of the room again. I could not stand her looking at me as if I am a stranger.
