"Claire Rogers, a student at Hallucaville High, was killed yesterday by an electricity shortage." said the male newscaster. The parents of Claire showed up on the screen and began speaking about Claire. How she did well in school, did a lot of community service around the town and such. The father of Claire kind of just stood to the side while his wife was talking.
"Police are still investigating why the shortage occurred, but until then, please send your best regards to the Rogers family." The news anchor concluded and moved on to the next story.
"Such a shame." My father next to me voiced. It really was. I wasn't close to Claire, but she was the student body president, had great grades, and had so much going for her.
"I hope they figure out what happened." I told my dad. He didn't reply. He just had a blank look on his face.
"I have to go out of town for the next three days or so." He suddenly said. I gave him a look telling him to elaborate. "Just business, honey." He concluded while kissing the top of my head. "I'll be gone when you get home from school, so I'll see you soon." He gave a small smile and went upstairs to pack his stuff.
I sighed and left the house to go pick up Stella for school and we were on our way in my red Honda CRV. Stella was silent on the way there which is surprising for her. She is always talking about something whether it be nonsense or something important. It looked like she was about to snap on someone if they said one word to her, so I kept my mouth shut.
I pulled into the parking lot turning into the space Stella and I share which is also next to Victor's car, but he was already in the school, it looked like.
When we got in the school, the drink machine was surrounded by "Do Not Cross" and "Caution" tape.
"I hate this." Stella said next to me. I gave her a look. "I mean, not knowing what happened. Only her dad knows what happened and he works for Town Hall so of course we'll never know." She explained while rolling her eyes. Stella and Claire lived next door to each other so they were better friends than Claire and I were. She also knew Claire's parents and had a right to say something like that.
"What goes on in Town Hall anyway?" I voiced out loud.
"Who the hell knows." Stella said rhetorically.
We heard a commotion come from the area of the drink machine. "You're kidding me." I said. Tanner, like the idiot he is, was on his phone while walking and tripped over the caution tape landing on his stomach with a grunt. "Why are we friends with him again?" I asked rhetorically to Stella. She shook her head while still laughing.
Tanner got up and dusted off his pants and whistled acting as though nothing had happened. He saw us laughing at him and rolled his eyes. Then, when he was in nobody else's sight, he gave us the finger and walked over to us making us laugh even harder.
A police officer came up behind him towering over his 5'11" height. "Excuse me. Sir?" The officer boomed in a deep voice. Tanner closed his eyes and mouthed 'why God?' making Stella and I chuckle even harder.
"Yes, officer?" Tanner asked in a squeaky voice and turned towards the officer in question.
"I hope whatever that was isn't a normal occurrence for you." The officer said with a stern voice. "Because that was ridiculously idiotic."
"Well he is an idiot." Stella mumbled causing me to cough back a chuckle.
"Not at all, sir. My mom texted me saying she found a dead possum in the yard under my window and wanted me to know because if I got home and saw that I probably would have-" Tanner rambled
