This was it. I was having an affair. One could say that I was following my heart, but I saw it as an affair, though technically I wasn’t married to Niall yet.

Check that, do I want to be married to Niall at all? These conflicting emotions were sending me to Crazyville as I met up with Liam and Niall for lunch two days later.

“So, how are you doing Lisa?” asked Liam as we sat down. Niall hadn’t arrived yet.

“Good,” I said as steadily as I could. “I’m good.”

Liam smiled, nodding as he said, “That’s good. Life’s going well for you?”

I tried to pinch back the irony as I said, “Yes, swell.”

Liam furrowed his brow when I said that, and then tilted his head.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” asked Liam. “You seem…just different.”

I was about to lie and say yes, I’m fine, why would you think that, when my phone rang.

“One second,” I said, before picking up. “Hello?”

“Hey, Annalise?” said Niall on the other end.

“Yeah? Where are you?” I asked.

I heard Niall sigh on the other end of the phone.

“Annalise, I’m sorry. I’m going to be late. I might not even make it,” he said wearily.

“What? What about lunch?” I practically cried. I glanced at Liam, who mouthed, “What’s wrong?”

“Yeah, I’m in a bit of a bind here. I’ll talk to you later, okay? See you.” Niall hung up before I could say anything.

I sighed and put down my phone. It was just another one of the disappointments Niall constantly dished out on a regular basis.

“Can’t make it? That’s too bad,” said Liam sympathetically. “Do you still want lunch?”

I nodded absentmindedly. I wasn’t really hungry anymore. I still loved Niall, I did, but why was I constantly feeling let down by him? It wasn’t his fault, surely it wasn’t…right?

“Lisa?” asked Liam.

“Yes?” I asked, snapping back into reality.

“What do you want to drink, ma’am?” asked the perky waitress, notepad and pen armed, ready for anything that crossed her path.

“Um…a coke please,” I said, trying to smile. It fell flat, and I ended up frowning.

The waitress wasn’t even fazed.

“I’ll be right back with those!” she chirped, her smile wide and bright as she fluttered away.

I looked back at Liam, who was studying me.

“What? Is there something on my face?” I asked, grasping suddenly at my cheeks.

“No,” said Liam, shaking his head. I stopped. “There’s something wrong. You seem…frazzled.”

“Frazzled? Me? No,” I said, forcing a bark of a laugh. The couple at the table next to us shot me a glare.

Liam didn’t even blink.

“No, I mean, you’re hiding something. What’s wrong, really,” he said, leaning in, gazing at me with his brown eyes.

“Um….” I said, but the waitress beamed up just at that moment to ask for our order.

“Actually, we’re just going to have drinks,” said Liam, his tone matter-of-factly. “Thank you though.”

“You sure?” asked the waitress, her smile gone, tilting her head to the side.

Liam smiled.

“Yes, we’re sure. We decided we’re not hungry, right Lisa?” he said, turning to me.

“Yeah,” I whispered, barely audible.

“Okay! I’ll grab your check then!” she said, her smile plastered back on her face. “Be right back!”

As she left, Liam turned back to me.

“What’s wrong, Lisa?” he asked, his tone firm and demanding.

I searched for words. That I was in love with both Harry and Niall? That I felt immense love towards Harry, but didn’t want to leave the security of Niall? That I was so confused, it was making me crazy?

I blurted it out, not too loud, just loud enough for us both to hear.

“I slept with Harry.”

Liam’s eyes widened, but he didn’t seem to be in the sort of shock that I expected him to be in.

Scrunching his face together, Liam processed the information.

“Well….” he began, weighing his words carefully. “I should say I’m surprised, but I’m not…”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Well, most of the boys tell me their secrets. I don’t exactly go and dish them out either. I keep them private. Harry came to me after he and Niall met you.” He stopped and winced.

I didn’t like where this was going, but I mentioned for him to continue.

“Well…he told me that he thought you were hot, the typical stuff, and I asked him, ‘Why are you telling me this?’ He stopped and said, ‘Because she’s different.’”

I tried to compose myself as I felt a rushing glee course through my body. I wasn’t sure if this was a good thing, but I had a presumption that it did.

“He was really bummed when Niall asked you out. He would always say how Niall was the luckiest guy in the world. Whenever Niall let you down, he’d say to me, ‘If she were mine, I’d never do that to her.’ He was really protective over you, more so than Niall almost. He always asked Niall how you were doing, and he always tried to break the ice with you. Of course, you always spit it back in his face.”

Liam gave me a look, and I scoffed.

“No I didn’t!”

Liam shrugged.

“His words, not mine. Anyways, I’m not surprised he finally made a move on you. The only reason I’m surprised is because I thought he’d make a move on you sooner. You know, before you moved to London.”

“What?” I was bewildered by what I was hearing.

“Yeah. Harry goes after what he wants most of the time,” said Liam, shrugging.

“Aren’t you more concerned about the fact that I’m having an affair with Harry?” I hissed under my breath.

Liam did a one-eighty.

“Wait, you actually like him back?” he asked, surprised.

I gave a short nod. That was all he was getting from me.

“Well….I don’t know. It’s not my business, and I promise I won’t tell anyone,” said Liam.

“Thanks Liam,” I said, smiling softly. “Means a lot to me.”

The waitress came back with the check and Liam paid it.

“Well, good luck Lisa. You’re going to need it,” said Liam, hugging me goodbye.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, surprised by his words.

He shrugged and smiled, before turning around and leaving.
