I didn’t wake up in some hospital room or in my bed. I woke up on the floor of the women’s bathroom, with Lucy peering down at me with a concerned look on her face.

“You okay?” she asked, offering her hand. I took it and she helped me up.

I shrugged. I didn’t feel great, but I didn’t feel woozy.

Lucy smiled when I shrugged and handed me a small, white, cardboard box. When I peered down at it, I saw it was a pregnancy test.

“Wha…?” I said, looking up at her. “Why…?”

Lucy shrugged.

“I’m a pre-med student. I’m working on becoming an OBGYN. You know, a baby doctor?” she said.

I had no idea what she was talking about. I just nodded and looked down at the pregnancy test again. It wasn’t one of those cheap pregnancy tests that Planned Parenthood handed out back home. It was one of the expensive kinds that women who are trying to get pregnant buy. First Response was written in bold white type across the front of the box.

“Well,” said Lucy, gesturing at the box. “Are you going to try it?”

I nodded, heading to a stall. I was afraid what this was going to tell me.

As I pulled down my jeans and sidled onto the rim, I heard Lucy say, “Oh, it’s one of those accurate pregnancy tests, the kind that usually doesn’t mess up?” I inwardly groaned. I was praying it would say no.

I took a deep breath and waited for it to be over. When I was done, I wiped myself, pulled up my pants, and flushed the toilet. I was so glad I wasn’t on my period….except I wouldn’t be on my period if I was pregnant…

I didn’t look at the stick as I opened the stall door and went to the sink to wash my hands. Lucy fidgeted as I took my time to lather and rinse my fingers and dry them on a paper towel. Finally, after I had thrown away the paper towel, I looked down at the stick.

A little pink plus could be seen, not faint, but bright and vibrant.

“So…was I right?” asked Lucy, peering over my shoulder. When I didn’t respond, she sighed.

“It’s okay. I’m sure your boyfriend will understand,” she said, patting my shoulder.

I whirled around, suddenly furious by what she said.

Boyfriend? My boyfriend will never believe that I got pregnant! He knows that we always use condoms! Ours has never broken! He’s going to be suspicious! He’s going to know that I….that I…” I broke down then and began to sob, taking big, heaving breaths in between.

Lucy didn’t know what to do at first. She stood there frozen before gently kneeling down and patting my shoulder reassuringly.

“There, there. I’m sure he’ll understand. He won’t get mad at you, it’s his child!” she said brightly.

I looked up then, my eyes red, snot oozing, tears streaming, and said in a cracked voice, “It’s not his.”

Lucy didn’t have the reaction I had suspected. Instead, she straightened herself up and said, “You can’t know for sure.”

I narrowed my eyes at her.

“How do you know?” I said a little accusingly.

Lucy smiled.

“You can get genetic testing done. They simply take a little of your blood because your baby’s DNA is running through your bloodstream right at this moment. Then, they compare it to the two fathers, and they see whose it is,” she explained.
