I walk home, since Dr. Brown’s office is just a few blocks away from my flat. When I open my front door, standing in my foyer is Adrian.

“Adrian!” I practically scream. “What the heck are you doing here?”

Adrian had a worried look on his face, and he rushed over and hugged me when I walked in. His embrace was warm, tight, and full of love. I felt my arms wrap around him instinctively, and the hug made me feel good, simple. Simple was what I wanted these days.

Adrian let go and smiled at me. It was a sad smile.

“Adrian…what are you doing here? You’re supposed to be back in L.A.!” I said, but I couldn’t help but smile. It was so nice to see him, even though I knew there was probably an unsavory reason he was here.

“I came to visit. Sorry I didn’t call first. I had to get away from L.A. It’s so hectic there, paps everywhere, fans constantly tackling you…you know, I might just move to London. No one seems to be following me here,” he said, his usual sarcasm in play.

I laughed.

“Trust me,” I said, placing a hand on his shoulder. “There are paparazzi everywhere in London. London’s just big enough that it’s hard to find us all.”

Adrian smiled, and I felt a buzzing warmth inside of me. It wasn’t love, but that fuzzy feeling you got when you’re with someone you love like a family member. I wish Adrian felt the same way for me.

“Lisa,” said Adrian, taking my hand in both of his and looking at me with his big round eyes. I felt the fuzzy feeling disappear as he slowly closed his eyes and leaned towards me, puckering his lips….

“No.”

Adrian opened his eyes and the look he gave me was almost unbearable. He was utterly hurt.

I searched my mind for explanations. The only one that I figured would best fit the situation was the truth.

“Adrian…I love you….but I’m pregnant,” I said. I placed the instinctive hand on my stomach and smiled softly.

Adrian backed away. He looked scared.

“Whose….?” he gasped, almost as if I’d knocked the wind out of him. I couldn’t understand why he was acting this way. What did he expect, coming here? I wasn’t going to fall for him just because he wasn’t a thousand miles away for once.

I shrugged.

“I don’t know yet,” I said honestly. “I’m doing a genetic testing at the moment. According to the doctor, I’m eight to nine weeks.” Though my stomach looked flat, there was a slight puff of flesh that was already protruding over my jeans.

Adrian put his head in his hands and muttered something to himself. I couldn’t catch it.

Finally, he looked up. He had tears in his eyes as he said, “Lisa, I’m so sorry. I should have….I should have protected you.”

I tried not to grimace as I said, “Protect me from what? Life? You can’t shield me forever, you know.”

Adrian wiped a tear away.

“I want what’s best for you,” he admitted. He looked me straight in the eye.

“Come with me. Tell them the baby’s mine. I’ll never let anything hurt you or the child, no matter whose it is,” he said.

I felt myself back up. Adrian was offering me something that could easily lead me out of all my problems. The only problem I could see with this solution was that I didn’t love Adrian.
