"Now, I want you to grab a book from the shelf. You are to read chapter thriteen and answer the questions in complete sentences. You have the whole period to do this, and I want silence. Go." My English teacher said. Of course, the class groaned, probably at how many questions there were referring to the chapter. The Red Badge of Courage. I stared at the image of the soldier on the cover before I opened my book and began to read.
'The youth went slowly toward the fire indicated by his departed friend. As he reeled, he bethought him of the welcome his comrades would give him. He had conviction that he would soon feel in his sore heart the barbed missiles of ridicule. He had no strength to invent a tale; he would be a soft target.
He made vague plans to go off into the deeper darkness and hide, but they were all destroyed by the voices of exhaustion and pain from his body. His ailments, clamoring, forced him to seek the place of food and rest, at whatever cost.
He swung unsteadily toward the fire. He could see the forms of men throwing black shadows in the red light, and as he went nearer it became known to him in some way that the ground was strewn with sleeping men...'
My eyes began to sting from reading, and I decided to take a small break. I just so happened to look out into the hallway, and he unexpectedly walked by. He smirked at me as he passed the room. I sat there, trying to process everything. Since I sit at the first desk in the first row by the door, he could easily see me. My heart was beating out of my chest by now. Why did he smirk at me? It wasn't long before he walked past the room again whilst he swung a set of keys around his finger. I could hear him whistle softly on the job. He must be on hall duty in this hallway then...
It still ponders in my mind about why he's here... Not that it's a bad thing, but I've never seen someone so young working as a security guard in a high school. I mean, why would you even want to go back to one anyway?
I suddenly realize that I'm wasting my own time, and I haven't even reached the middle of the chapter yet. I look at the time, and I've only got about ten minutes left.
"By the way guys, what you don't finish is homework." The teacher suddenly said, making a few of the students jump slightly. The class groaned once more. I continued to read for the time being until the bell rang. There were two minutes left now, so I began to pack up. The bell rings, and students rush out of the classroom, me being the last one. As I'm walking I feel my phone vibrate in my bag.
