The soft buzz of my drill matched the R&B playlist floating through my shop as I finished up my last client of the afternoon. I sealed her glossy nude set, wiped her cuticles, then pushed back from the table, stretching my back a little.

Nine weeks today.
Appointment day.

The day everything starts feeling real.

"Girl these are so pretty," my client said, grinning at her nails.

"You're welcome," I smiled. "Tag me, ok?"

She nodded and headed to the mirror while I cleaned my station. I checked my watch.

2:41 PM.
Jai would be here any minute.

Before I could head to the back, Des popped her head around my door.

"Lay... you excited?" she asked with a teasing smile.

"A little," I admitted, rubbing my tiny bump. "I'm mostly trying not to overthink."

Tai came up behind her. "Girl, don't overthink. You pregnant, that's normal. But you glowing today for real."

"I second that," Noelle said,"You look like you in your mama era already."

I laughed. "Y'all so extra."

"No," Des pointed. "We serious. And text the group chat soon as you get out. I wanna know EVERYTHING."

"I'm tb every thing " Noelle added

I shook my head laughing. "Okay, okay, I'll text y'all."

We all said bye, I grabbed my purse, stepped outside, and saw Jai pulling into the lot. He reached over and opened the passenger door from the inside.

"Come on, mama," he said with that soft voice that always made me melt.

I climbed in and buckled up. He leaned over and kissed my cheek gently.

"You feelin' straight?" he asked.

"I'm hungry."

"Bet. I figured we could stop and get something small before we go."

We grabbed something quick fries and a lemonade for me, nuggets for him then headed straight to the doctor's office.

Inside, the waiting room smelled faintly of sanitizer and carpet cleaner. Soft chatter filled the room as we checked in and sat down. Jai draped his arm behind me so I could lean into him.

"You nervous?" he asked.

"Not really nervous... just ready."

He kissed the side of my head. "You gon' be good."
