Seeing how WattPunk is generally exclusive to the world of WattPad, I discovered the genre only when @Ooorah announced this month's issue. 'What the what?' perfectly sums up my first reaction. I asked Angus to send me some links on stories, surreptitiously for a review, but in truth to see how WattPunk works in action.
I've come to think of it as 'When We Were WattPad Gods' or 'Star in Your Own Adventure.' Because it's kind of like the classic Choose Your Own Adventure books...but it also resembles the myths of Greek gods who, finding themselves bored out of their minds on Olympus, jumped into the fray to mess life up for the tiny beings under their control.
As you might already suspect, both The Hairy Porter and the Bedchamber of Secrets by vanitycat as well as Wormholed by AngusEcrivain are pretty crazy fantasies starring none other than Angus himself plus a handful of fellow WattPadders.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish either The Hairy Porter story (not Harry Potter fanfic, but a race to rescue heavy metal music) or Wormholed since they are both fairly long. However, I did get a good feel for both of the stories.
If you are looking for pure, unadulterated fun, look no further.
The Hairy Porter introduces you to Angus, the hairy porter/would-be rock star who, like all other heavy metal players in the world, loses his memory of any good song ever written after the death of the entire Metallica band. The mysterious EVH Frankenstein guitar left on a hotel bed may be the key to bringing heavy metal music back to life. Can Angus save the music? Check it out for the answer, but be ready for all sorts of weirdness.
Of course, Wormholed might be even more weird (and fun). In this strange universe, a misplaced Stephen King quote will open up a wormhole to another world, one that may or may not be friendly and where you'll probably be smaller or at least less significant than before.
Fair warning: randomness ensues immediately and in the second chapter, you will find Angus waking up with a nasty hangover, face covered in make-up and clothes missing except for a pair of red stilettos*. And that's before it gets really weird. You will encounter papier-mâché soldiers, talking cats, psychic butterflies, ladies watching Butt Sluts 38 and the cool Angus from another dimension in the first handful of chapters. Highly recommended story if you need something that doesn't take itself seriously!
*There are unconfirmed rumors that this part is based on a true story.
