CHAPTER ONE

Hawkins, Indiana
NOVEMBER, 1983

N/N = YOUR NICKNAME

IT'S COLD AND DARK, THE SOUND OF THE WIND FLOWING THROUGH THE UPSIDE DOWN IS HEARD ALL AROUND. Will softly sings to himself, lying inside his very own makeshift fort.

"CASTLE BYERS"

"Should I stay or should I go now?" Will sang, keeping his voice low. "Should I stay or should I go now?"

"If I go, there will be trouble. And if I stay, it will be double. So, come on and let me know.." His body shivered from the cold. "Should I stay or should I go?"

The loud sound of a branch breaking outside startled him, making him prop himself up on his elbow. He pants heavily as the eerie, creature like sound comes from beyond the fort. It can be heard walking around with slow, heavy steps.

Will's breathing remains uneven, soft gasps in between. Then the footsteps stop. A terrifying silence, just for a moment.

"Y/n..?"

The Demogorgon suddenly yanks the cloth away, flaring its mouth at Will. He quickly grabs the shotgun and aims, firing straight into its mouth and forcing it to back away. Will takes his chance and runs straight out of the fort.

The Demogorgon roars in anger. Will runs as fast as he can, managing to climb to the top of a tree. He clings to a branch and looks down.

He doesn't see anything in the fog below. Maybe he's safe. Then the Demogorgon roars again, searching for him. Will pants softly, then freezes as the creature starts climbing the tree.

He looks to the next tree, one of its branches close enough to reach. The Demogorgon climbs faster, roaring as it reaches for him. Will takes a leap of faith, jumping and stretching his hand toward the other branch. He grabs it, but slips, crashing through the branches below.

One branch catches him, tangling in his backpack. The backpack's strap began to loosen. Once it completely unties from the backpack, Will yells as he falls, slamming into the ground and knocking himself out cold.

The Demogorgon's hand wraps around his ankle and drags him away.

Thunder crackles as the Demogorgon hauls Will's body through a hallway filled with sluggish vines. It throws him aside, then turns and bows to someone in the dark.

Vecna steps forward, moving his hand slightly as vines wrap around Will and lift him against the wall. He approaches until he is standing right in front of him.
