Sally Jackson stared at the calendar for a long time before finally marking a big red X through the day of August 18th and the words "Percy's Bday."
She remembered Percy giving her the calendar for Christmas last year. Then they'd stayed up on New Years marking important dates throughout the year. Birthdays were written in blue, because they were Percy's favorite.
Then, despite the promises she'd made to herself regarding her son's 18th birthday on the day he was born, Sally Jackson began to cry. Her baby boy, her little miracle, was all grown up. Soon, he'd be starting his own life and having his own children. He didn't need his mother anymore.
Suddenly, Sally felt a warm pair of arms wrap around her.
"I love you, Mom," Percy said, smiling into her hair.
Sally took a shuddering breath and turned around, then kissed her baby on the cheek. She stroked his dark hair and stared into his foamy green eyes.
"I know you do, Percy," she said, getting choked up again. The two entrapped each other in a hug. "Happy birthday, sweetheart."
