(Spencer's P.O.V.)
I heard my phone make a beeping noise. I sat up in my bed, feeling over for Lauren. I softly touched her side. I looked over at the phone, realizing, we had a case. I had to go in. I gently shook Lauren awake. She mumbled, "hm?" She looked up at me, her eyes tired.
"I am going to work." I told her in a whisper. She nodded, turning back over, returning to sleep. I stood from the bed. My clock had said 3:52. It was 3:52AM. I was tired and I didn't want to go in. I considered all of the people that need me. Hesitating, I walked over to my closet and packed an overnight bag anyways. I walked into the kitchen, grabbing a cold coffee from the fridge. I took my overnight bag and walked down stairs, out the door, and to my car.
I drove down the road, tired, nearly falling asleep. My head bobbling over. My head jilted up as I felt myself falling into a deep sleep within the car. Statistically, an estimated 1,550 deaths happen from dozing off at the wheel.
My heart pounded harder as I feared that I was going to topple over in my car, crashing. My head began to slowly droop onto my shoulder. I had not but one second to awaken, and my second was up. The car drove over a small hill, flipping two or three times. My head bumped against the roof of the car. I felt blood running down my face, pain striking my whole body. I found it difficult to move as I was falling in and out of consciousness.
As my eyes opened and closed, it seemed as if life was skipping over scenes. Sirens began to ring in my head, causing my migraines to worsen. I tried my hardest to lift my hands up to my ears and hold them there, blocking sound, but it was difficult to even lift my arms above my waist.
I saw a man running down the hill, quickly opening the door to drag me out of the car. He placed me on the ground.
"Sir, I am here to help you. Can you tell me your name, please?" The man, now recognized as a paramedic said. I blinked continuously, hoping to get a grip onto my reality.
"Spe- Spencer... Spencer R-" I tried to speak out and say my name. It was more difficult than I had suspected. He nodded, clarifying that he had gotten the picture. "Do you have a number you'd like us to call for you?" He asked me, looking around me for some kind of sign of my identity or anything.
"In... In my phone," I managed to get a sentence out clearly, despite the horrible frustration and pain it was causing me. "Lauren.. In my- in my po-" I began to slowly fade out again.
I felt the medic reach into my pocket, pulling out my cellphone. He flipped it open, scrolling through my contacts, the phone beeping as he passed each person. A sigh of relief came out as he dialed the number.
His voice began to fade away, as I slipped into sleep. I heard none of what he said.
(Lauren's P.O.V.)
It was 4:15AM as I got a call! I woke up, mad. Who the hell was calling me this early? I reached over to the table, picking up my phone, seeing Spencer's name. My heart dropped. Why was Spencer calling me this early? He knows I want sleep. Was there something wrong? I quickly answered, fright in my voice.
"Hello?" I said in a loud whisper.
"Lauren?" A deep voice said. My stomach turned.
"This is she." I said, gulping. "Who is this?"
"Ma'am, Spencer R. was just in a car accident off of Russel road. He flipped into a ditch."
"Where can I-" I began to sweat. "Where can I meet him- you?"
"We are taking him to the hospital at the moment, you can see him there." He said. "We are just alerting you."
"Alright, thank you." I said, hanging up the phone. I turned and looked at the side which he was laying on thirty minutes ago. My heart felt as if it would bursae my chest. I placed my hand to my breast, trying to calm down. My breaths came out quickly, heavily. I stood out of bed, realizing that my phone was ringing again from, JJ.
I answered fast, in a frenzy.
"JJ, hi!" I said into the phone, using one hand to search for a shirt to wear to the hospital.
"Uh, hi, Lauren. Sorry to call you at such an odd hour. Reid was supposed to be here about thirty minutes ago, but he never showed, and we were just wondering if you had any idea where he was..."
"He was in a car accident off of Russell Road. He is being rushed to the hospital. I have no idea what is going on. I don't know about his condition or anything. I am getting ready to head over there right now, actually."
"Oh my god." She sounded worried. "Uh- we are about to leave for Illinois on a case right now. I heard a muffled sound of her telling the rest of the team what had happened. Her voice came back into the phone. "Penelope is staying behind. She will probably be up there some, if that's alright."
"No, no, that's- uh- that's fine, JJ." I said, slipping on tennis shoes.
"Alright. I am hoping for the best. Tell Spence we are thinking of him, Lauren. Bye." She hung up, just like that. I placed the phone in the pocket of my sweats. I turned towards the door and ran out of it, then down to the lobby. I jogged out to my car. It was still dark outside. I hopped into the seat, and started it as fast as I could. I pulled out, also, as fast as I could.
I drove down the road, worried. As I passed through Russel Rd., traffic was bad. I saw cops guiding us away from the accident. I peered over the hill, looking for the car. I saw it there. It looked horribly damaged. I noticed some red spots inside of the glass. I became sick to my stomach, ready to vomit. I held it back, driving on.
At the hospital, I rushed to sign in.
"Do you have any updates on his condition?" I asked the receptionist, awaiting the answer. She shook her head, disappointed and confused. I tucked my lips in, nodding. I was so nervous. I bit my lip.
Biting your lip is a nervous tick. Why are you anxious? I remembered Spencer asking me once. No matter where I looked, Spencer's stupid statistics and facts came to mind. Everything in this hospital reminded me of Spencer. Everything.
I sat there, my legs crossed. I suddenly saw a plump Penelope appear around the corner. I stood up, ready for her to hug me. She was a hugger.
She threw her arms around me. I placed my head on her shoulder, allowing her to comfort me. Tears were rolling down my cheeks and onto her striped green and purple dress.
I pulled away. "I had something to tell him today." I said, wiping away my tears.
"Oh. What was it."
"I am saving it until I see him. I want to surprise him." I smiled, looking at the ground. I saw a man with a white coat and a clip board walking towards us, his face determined.
"Lauren... Hill?" He asked me. I nodded, struggling to keep the suspense holding. "You may see him now." He said, leading me to the hospital room in which Spencer lay, his brown hair hanging all in his face. I ran over to him, pulling up a chair.
I took his hand in mine, staring at him, awaiting his awakening. Within the first minute of me there, his eyes opened. He blinked a few times, scrunching his face, before he turned his head to look at me. Penelope was in the corner chair, staring us down. I took his hand tighter.
"Hi." I said, removing his extra strands of hair from his face. "How are you feeling?"
"In pain," he moaned. I nodded, understanding him. I leaned forward and kissed him softly on the lips. He pulled his hand up to my face, stroking my cheek. I smiled a smile of pure relief.
"I love you." He said to me, quietly.
"Spencer." I said, looking as if I was avoiding his remark. His face began to show concern. "I have something to tell you." He nodded, still looking concerned. I moved closer, pulling his hand down, placing it on my stomach.
"I'm pregnant." I said, quietly. His face was overcome with joy. His jaw dropped. A smile broke out, as he forgot all of the pain in his head and just focused on my latest statement.
"Really?" He whispered. We turned and looked at Penelope. She was smiling, happy for us. I looked back at him. "Yes, really." I said, almost laughing.
"I love you, Spencer."
"I love you too."
And this time, I was sure of it.
