The first thing that I became aware of was voices. There were three.
The first one was panicked, high pitched. The second one was not as high pitched, but still panicky. The third was calm, collected. My mind could recall who was who. But I was confused as to where I was.
"Give her time. Her mind took in too much information at once." The calm voice spoke. It was Evan.
"What information?" The higher pitched voice practically shrieked. My mind made the connection that it was mom.
"We did some research, it left her in a daze so she went for a walk." The third voice spoke. Jackson.
"What kind of research?" Mom's voice had grown quieter, almost fearful.
"Dad's files. We found some things that we think are connected to his death."
"Have you spoken to the body guards?"
"I spoke to them after she left. We're on lock down now. Especially with what's happened today."
"But you're schoolwork-"
"We're being escorted to and from school. They're moving Klara in with us because she's been in so much contact with Scar, it's dangerous. The gang who they suspect are doing this are dangerous and won't hesitate to hurt someone else to get what they want." Jackson explained.
"They are dangerous." Evan spoke again and I struggled with the darkness, so I could fully understand.
"How do you know?" My mother's tone was sharp and I wanted to hit her. Then again, I wanted to hit him.
"They're the reason my mom died." He spoke quietly and my heart dropped as did my stomach.
"Oh, I'm so sorry." The sharpness had changed to sympathy. I could just picture him shrugging it off.
"It happened years ago, don't worry about it." I felt bad for Evan. It meant that he knew how we had felt.
The heaviness which had weighed my eyes down lifted and I opened up my eyes revealing that I was in the study that would have been dad's if he had lived.
"You're awake." Evan noted, and I half smiled.
"I'm alive thanks to you." I returned as my mom attacked me in a tight hug, restricting my breathing.
"We had a doctor come around and he patched up your leg." I raised an eyebrow and she sighed. "Because the attack was primarily for you, we're on lock down. We can't leave the house." I felt my heart sink.
"But, what about school and all that?"
Mom exchanged a look with Jackson and he just shrugged.
"You have the option to go, but you'll be taken there and back. And you're going to have to fill Klara in as well."
"Why?"
"Because she needs to move in with us." I stared at my mom with wide eyes and she sighed. "You're too close to her. She's in danger now." I pushed myself up properly, realising I was lay on the couch in the study room.
"How's your head?" Evan asked quietly and I shrugged. I winced when I moved my leg and his lips twitched ever so slightly. "Your leg is going to hurt for a while. Doc ordered that you use the crutches." He pointed to the grey crutches which were resting on the end of the couch and I groaned.
"Great." I muttered and he laughed.
"Mom, can you give us some space? I need to talk to Evan and Jackson about some stuff." She hesitated and I sighed. "Please?" She nodded her head, placing a kiss on my forehead.
