My eyes narrowed in concentration as I stared across the table at April who had finished the waffles Erin made for breakfast already, and was using her fork to push around and shape the leftover syrup.
Ever since we'd all woken up, I could tell something was off with April. She wasn't as loud and smiley as she usually was. I knew there must be some reason, a reason that would probably make me want to punch something because I couldn't make it stop bothering her.
I'd become extremely protective over April. I just wanted to keep her safe and make any bad thoughts threatening to poison her mind go away and never come back.
I was slightly frustrated that in the many conversations flying around the room, no one was asking her what was wrong. I'm absolutely sure that if April would tell them about what was going on with her, they would no doubt feel the same as me, and be willing to kill someone for her happiness. But April didn't want to hurt them; she was 100% ready to sacrifice herself for them. Which I respected, which I admired, but I wanted her to see that it wouldn't hurt them to tell the complete truth. It would make them closer.
A small smile lit up my face as I decided something; April was sad, and I didn't like it. So I was going to fix it. If I can't solve the problem, at least I can treat the symptoms until a cure is found.
"April and I are going on a field trip." I said, standing up, gaining everyone's attention.
"When was this decided?" April asked, her grin already starting to get bigger, causing my lips to widen.
"Two seconds ago. Get dressed, we're leaving in half an hour!" With that, I walked away to change out of my pajamas, hearing April's silly chuckle behind me.

"This is spontaneous." April commented with a grin as she walked towards her car which I was leaning against. I swung her keys around my finger, admiring her blue plaid leggings under jean shorts and black shirt with a white peace sign.
"Is that your jacket?" I asked, pointing at the unfamiliar purple jacket wrapped around her.
"Nope, it's Kris'." She replied as I walked around to the other side of the car and she jumped into the passenger seat.
When we were seated next to each other, I leaned over and sniffed April's neck, making her giggle and roll her big brown eyes.
"It doesn't smell like you." I pouted, making her laugh out loud.
"Well I'm sorry that my obsession with taking my friends' clothing had foiled your plan to smell me all day." She sassed, and I couldn't help but admire her sense of humor.
"So, where are we going?" April changed the subject as I put the car in drive.
"Downtown Lawrence," I replied with the name of her hometown, where her house was, "we're going on a shopping adventure.
