…
“Liv, tell me.”
By the tone of his voice, I could tell that he wasn’t messing around. He was serious. Deadly so. I sighed, reviewing whether it was a good idea to leave out the worst of the terrible truth.
“I-I don’t think you want to know,” I mumbled meekly, trying to deter him in his seemingly murderous mission to know what Chris had meant by ‘Class A slut’. He was right, of course. I turned around on my heels and walked through the house, flopping myself on the bed. How am I supposed to tell Finn that I’m not the angel he thinks I am? Finn followed quickly. He seemed to soften at my expression, eyebrows un-knitting themselves. “I got around a bit, okay?”
“How much is ‘a bit’?” he asked cautiously.
“You’re very far down the list of people that I’ve dated, Finny. Let’s just put it that way.”
“Stop dancing around it and tell me your number!” he cried frustratedly. In a meek attempt at trying to distract him, I placed a searing, passionate kiss on his lips, tangling my fingers through his hair. I couldn’t tell him. He’d leave me. He’d leave me for a girl who had made better life choices. He’d leave me for a girl who could tell him the truth. He’d leave me for good. Life without Finn would mean next to nothing. He pulled away, shaking his head twice as if he was fighting a trance. “I’m not kidding, Olive Rose Pepper.”
I flinched slightly upon hearing my full name. “You’re-“
“Hey guys!” Jack said, interrupting us. I let out a sigh of relief. At least I could gather my words for a few minutes.
“Jack. Not now,” Finn hissed. Clearly, he was very intent on hearing the amount of people I’d slept with, no matter how embarrassingly large it was.
“Oh, uh, mum and dad wanted to talk to you,” he stumbled, handing Finn the phone. Finn gave short, curt yes or no answers, wanting to cut the conversation as short as he could.
Finn’s POV:
“Have you and Olive been getting on well?” my father, Andy, asked. He was just asking the question out of common curtesy, but the words made me wonder. If she wouldn’t tell me a simple number, then what else wouldn’t she tell me? She seemed embarrassed, but it couldn’t be that bad. Could it?
“Yes, dad,” I said, and however unconvincing my answer was, he accepted it, saying goodbye and hanging up. I handed Jack his phone. He scurried off quicker than I could blink, leaving us alone again. A heavy air hung over us as she mustered up the courage to spout the number out. Why did I care so much? I loved her, and that was all that mattered. But I couldn’t let it go.
“20,” she mumbled. “It’s 20. I’ve slept with 20 guys.”
20? Ollie blushed red, eyes cast down to the wooden slats on the floor in the same way that always threw butterflies roaring in the pit of my stomach. “So I’m just another guy that you mess around with? Another guy to go at the bottom of your list-“
“No, of course not-“
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I demanded, eyes widening in anger, eyebrows furrowing together again.
“I was afraid,” she said weakly.
“Afraid of what? That I’d know about your past? I’m beginning to think this is a one sided relationship, Liv!” I cried exasperatedly. “I give you everything. Love, admiration, gifts. What do I get in return? Nothing. I only just found out about fucking Chris, for God’s sake!”
“I just thought…” she trailed off, unable to finish her sentence.
“I just thought you were different. You know, a girl who doesn’t avoid the truth constantly? Or do you not know how to do that?”
“One mistake, Finn. I made one. It happens,” she mumbled, eyes still cast to the floor.
“No, you made 20 of them, Olive,” I shot back, growling with more anger than I even knew I had.
Suddenly, she stood. “How about I make that number 21?” she spat. “Remind me, which cabin was Jack’s?”
My blood boiled with rage, breathing ragged and uneven due to the extraordinary amount of infuriation pumping through my blood system at an alarming rate. “You wouldn’t dare,” I muttered.
“What’s stopping me? You clearly won’t, considering you think I’ll just fuck you and leave,” she retorted, her voice slowly rising to a shout.
“That’s not what I said-“
“But it’s what you implied, wasn’t it?” she demanded, eyes flashing with anger as she brushed the hair out of her face. “Maybe I should go home.”
When I didn’t reply, she grabbed her suitcases, stuffing them back with the clothes that had been carelessly thrown on the floor. Did this mean that we were over? My jaw tightened, but I couldn’t stand to lose my pride. She looked back, one last time, shooting me a look that was somewhere between desperation and disappointment. The stare seemed to send warnings shooting through my body. Don’t let her slip away, Finnegan, they said. Within seconds, she left, lugging her suitcase with her. Just like that, she was gone. It took us all of 5 minutes to ruin a relationship that I had previously thought was solid as a rock. I heard the Jeep roar off, and just like that, she was gone, all because I was a stubborn, stupid prick. It suddenly dawned on me. I would never get to brush stray fallen eyelashes from underneath her eye. I would never get to see the smile on her lips and know that I was the reason. Despair sprouted in the pit of my stomach, resonating for the long hours ahead.
