Chapter 45: The Dust Settles on False Kings
Flashback – Land of This, Castle Town
The silence that followed Suguru Geto’s departure was heavier than the battle itself. The smoke from Deidara’s explosions drifted lazily into the sky, mingling with the dust of pulverized stone.
Shikamaru stood amidst the wreckage of the courtyard, his shadow stretching long in the afternoon sun. He stared at the spot where Geto had vanished, his mind working furiously to categorize the man. He killed Naruto. Then he left the Akatsuki. Now he saves a samurai and fights off two S-rank criminals just because he was… bored?
"Troublesome doesn't even begin to cover it," Shikamaru muttered, rubbing his temples.
Beside him, Ino and Choji emerged from cover, Lord Shu trembling slightly between them. The young lord looked around at the devastation—the shattered puppets, the cratered streets—his face pale.
"Is… is it over?" Shu asked, his voice small.
"For now," Shikamaru replied. He turned to Tatewaki. The samurai was staring at his own arm, flexing the fingers. The wound where the poison had entered was gone, leaving only pristine, unblemished skin where necrotic purple flesh should have been.
"He healed me," Tatewaki said, his voice raspy with disbelief. "In an instant. Without hand signs. Who… what was that man?"
"A ghost from our village," Shikamaru said grimly. "And evidently, a problem for the future."
The Farewell
The group gathered near the shattered gates of the castle. The immediate threat was gone, but the political reality remained. Lord Shu had to leave. The "kidnapping" mission had to be completed to give the Land of This a pretext to keep the treaty, even though the Akatsuki's attack had exposed the Land of That's aggression openly.
Princess Chiyo stepped forward, her kimono dusted with ash but her dignity intact. She looked at Tatewaki, eyes glistening. In the original timeline of fate, this would have been a mourning; today, it was a reunion.
"Tatewaki," she breathed. "You’re alive."
The samurai bowed low, his forehead touching the dirt. "I failed to protect the perimeter, Princess. I allowed the enemy into our home. I am unworthy."
"You stood against our enemies to protect me," Chiyo corrected firmly. "You are the shield of this nation. And thanks to that stranger… you are still here to hold that shield."
Lord Shu stepped forward. The events of the day had stripped away his bratty facade. He looked at the destruction, then at the Akatsuki cloaks on the broken puppets. He realized now who had sent them. His own father. His own nation.
"Chiyo," Shu said, his voice trembling but resolute. "I… I didn't know. I didn't know my father would go this far. To hire mercenaries… to try and wipe you out…"
"It is not your sin, Shu," Chiyo said softly.
"But it is my burden," Shu replied. He looked at Tatewaki, then at the Konoha ninja. "I have to go back. If I stay, the Land of That will just send another army. I have to go back and convince my father… or take his place one day. I will change my country. I promise you, the Land of That will never threaten you again."
He turned to Tatewaki. The two men locked eyes—the samurai and the young lord he had guarded.
"Tatewaki," Shu said, bowing his head. "Thank you. For everything. Please… protect her."
Tatewaki straightened, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. A rare, faint smile touched his lips. "With my life, Young Lord. Go with honor."
