The next day was their first official shift. Hannah refused to go to work, rather disappointed in her given spot.
"It's not fair. How come Brayden got into Intelligence and I'm stuck down here on crossing guard duty?!"
"You're the softie, so if you wanna get into my unit, you need to tone it down."
"What made you pick Brayden over me?"
"He's the I don't care type, that's the attitude you need to get into my unit. Gain that attitude and then maybe I'll consider it." Justin said, turning around and going upstairs.
"UGH." She slumped down into the seat outside Shay's office.
"Wanna talk?"
"Please."
Leslie closed the door and then sat back at her desk. "What's up?"
"Justin told me I was too soft for his unit. He doesn't want me in his unit. This is crap."
"Justin's an asshole. Hank's an asshole. That's just how they work."
"I wanted to be in Intelligence like my mom and dad were."
Leslie's phone rang, so Hannah politely walked out so she could answer.
"Come here a minute." Trudy said.
"What?"
"Your mom barked up that tree for three years, it took her three years to get up there. You're gonna make it up there, one day. Keep your head up and kick ass out there. Or hope someone screws themselves over and loses their spot. Don't give up hope."
Kim was coming in, clearly having been outside a while, as her face was flushed pink.
"Mom, I give up."
"Come into my office." She said, leading her down the stairs.
"Patrol isn't what I wanted. What's so bad about me that I didn't get up there?"
"Nothing is bad about you. I have to agree with them that you are a little on the soft side."
"That's really what I needed to hear right now." Hannah said in a sarcastic tone, leaning back into the chair she was sitting in.
She went to walk out, but her father stopped her.
"Hannah, you sit your butt back in that chair right now."
"No, dad. I'm out."
"If you don't sit back down in that chair, I'm gonna write something really embarrassing on your patrol car."
She huffed and sat back down. "What?"
"Patrol is where both of us started."
"You only got those spots because Voight's known you both since you were kids."
"That's not why."
"Brayden's always got everything better than me. It's clear he's the favorite twin. You should've just given me up. You like him so much better."
She stormed out of the office and by the downstairs vending machines.
"What bit your ass now?" Ashley asked, coming into view.
"I'm sick of this."
"Sick of what?"
"Brayden always getting treated better than us. All because he's a guy and can "do the job better" than us. They stuck me down on patrol. Yeah I should be happy that I got the job here, I just really wanted to be in Intelligence. Every cop in our family has been in that unit at one point or another. This makes me feel so under appreciated and worthless."
