3RD PERSON's POV
The other day.
The drive back from school was quiet, the only sounds being the steady rhythm of the rain and the low hum of the heater. Jennie was huddled in the passenger seat, buried under another one of Lisa's heavy jackets. She looked pale, her breathing shallow, but her eyes remained sharp, tracking the raindrops as they raced down the glass.
"You're shivering again," Lisa said. She reached over, turning the heat to its maximum setting.
"I'm fine," Jennie replied, though her voice was barely a whisper. She leaned her head against the cool window, closing her eyes. "Just drive."
The silence was broken by the sharp buzz of Lisa's phone. A sequence of encrypted numbers flashed on the console. Lisa's posture changed instantly—her shoulders squared, and her expression went cold.
"Report," Lisa commanded. The warmth was gone from her voice; she sounded like a different person entirely.
"We have a problem in the underworld," Min Yoongi's raspy voice came through the speakers. "The Triad shipment was intercepted. Someone leaked the route. The Board is calling an emergency session at the hideout. Now. We're waiting for you."
Lisa glanced at Jennie, who had opened her eyes and was watching her with narrow, suspicious pupils.
"I'm on my way," Lisa said firmly. "I have the associate with me."
"Bring her," Yoongi replied, his tone neutral. "The Board wants everyone accounted for."
The call ended with a click. Lisa swung the car into a sharp turn, heading away from the city lights toward the darker outskirts. While keeping one hand on the wheel, her thumb flicked across the screen, sending a message to Yoongi:
Clean it up. Tell everyone to act decent. This is a high-level emergency meeting. No mention of illegal ops or 'the life.' If anyone slips up, they answer to me. I'm bringing an outsider.
Jennie watched the exchange, her brow furrowing despite the fever. "What was that? Who is 'the leader'?"
"A work emergency," Lisa said, her eyes fixed on the road. "I need you to stay close to me and keep that jacket on. We're going to a meeting. Don't ask questions until we're back home."
Jennie sank deeper into the seat, the weight of the fever finally pulling her under. She was too exhausted to fight, but through the haze of her mind, one thing was clear: the girl driving the car with such cold, calculated focus wasn't just a student anymore. The Lisa she knew—the girl from the condo—was only a fragment of the person sitting next to her.
Outside the window, the neon glow of the city began to bleed away, replaced by the oppressive, dark silhouette of the outskirts. Jennie tried to sit up, to squint at the passing road signs, but her vision fractured. Every light was a smear of gold against the black; every shadow felt like it was closing in.
She had no idea where they were going. The familiar streets of their neighborhood were long gone, replaced by winding roads that climbed higher into the secluded hills. In any other situation, being driven into the dark by someone who had just taken a call about "the underworld" would have sparked a panic. But as Jennie's head lolled against the headrest, her eyes glassy and unfocused, she felt a strange, heavy silence in her chest.
She doesn't have a clue about this Lisa—the "Queen" who commanded men with a single word—but she trusted her. It was a blind, instinctive thing, a tether she held onto while the fever tried to sweep her away. Even as the city disappeared entirely in the rearview mirror, Jennie didn't ask to go back.
